There's nothing more aggravating than having someone that owes you money yet when you look at their Facebook and they are traveling, buying shite, eating out, etc

Exactly. Sounds like a baw who already has a summer vacation planned to 30A.

Yup — if the friend were serious, he’d sell his truck and get a 5 year old Toyota or Honda commuter car (let the wife keep the kid hauler), sell the toys, STOP EATING OUT, and limit vacations to once a year, and tell the kids they get one extracurricular activity if it costs money, private schooling for the kids would be the last thing I’d cut (depending on where they live).

He’s not looking for a solution if he hasn’t taken these common sense steps first.

This is why I could probably never do it. I know I just said above I did, but it was more of a situation with someone I'm basically forever indebted to for the shite they did basically helping raise me as a kid, blah blah blah.

But outside of that scenario, I could never do this because I know the type of person I am, and there is zero chance I could not say anything after I gave a friend $3k and 3 months later, they're posting pics of their family vacation to Hawaii. I know myself, and I'd 100% say something that wouldn't go over well and it wouldn't matter as that would be the end of the friendship from my perspective the moment they made a big luxury purchase without paying me back. I just couldn't do it.

And given that the friend got angry when OP discussed him cutting back, this friend was also going to 100% make another luxury expenditure in the next 6 months or so, no question.

Basically, given that exact scenario, I feel like I'm losing a friend no matter what, so I may as well keep a few 1000 in my pocket in doing so.
