just gotta get through this stretch.
Yeah my dad is like this. It's always a bad stretch and once he's out of it he's going to pay me back. In his mind everything goes according to plan other than the present.
That's the problem with these people that can't manage their finances. They never account for anything other than best case scenario.

There was a recent call to a major show that talked about this here.

That post is a good example of the creditor side of the problem, it’s hard to avoid scrutinizing your now-debtor, perhaps unfairly so. Not saying your being unfair but it’s easy to slide into that.

It's best not to loan friends money I have found. So when I have a friend who asks for a loan, I decide if I want to gift them the money, or part of it. And then I gift it to them and tell them that if they should later decide the gift is a loan that they would like to pay back, I will gladly accept.
Have not lost or even gotten pissed off at a single friend this way.

and I "loaned" him the $3K. He assured us he was gonna pay us back really quick. This was in mid August.

BIL did call me back and said he would start paying me $200/month.

Tell him to call Dave Ramsey, see what Dave says. Your pal is an idiot, and you are too if you give him money. Unless you consider it a gift.

I'm not going to read this whole thread.....but, my rule is this: If you loan someone under $2,000, expect that you may never see that money again. It's a gift versus a loan. If over $2,000, I have them sign a contract. Period. Even family.
I do the exact same thing but I use $1000 as a limit for a contract.
It has actually been helpful because one of my family members (who repeatedly would ask for money) - I finally decided to loan him some and had him sign a contract and he has never paid me back.
It was worth the minor $ loss to shut him up for the last 10 years.

He gets kinda angry at this point like Im accusing him of something. Calms down and we just kinda end it. Hope I didnt lose a friend.
If he gets angry at logic and reason than how good of a friend is he really?

Probably some combination of the quality of folks I’ve been around and how I project to folks.
Charity is best given anonymously; if I were to be charitable, I’d follow the biblical guidance-
“But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your almsgiving may be in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will repay you.”

I have found it’s best to only loan money to sugar babies.

How can we possibly evaluate this without pics of the guy's wife? You can't ask for expert opinions and then withhold relevant data.
