What am I missing

I haven't checked for changes, but the rule used to be that the runner had to stay in FOUL TERRITORY (lane outlined by chalk line) in FOUL territory for the final 2/3 the distance to 1st base on any play was from 'behind the runner' on the way to 1st base. I found this out early in my career when I tried to run inside the line on a bunt down the first base line - (I 'thought' I had outsmarted the defense by my clever bunt = make it difficult for the catcher to make the throw) - Everybody made fun of me because I was 'so dumb' - but I never made that mistake again.

The runner was definitely "out" by that rule in this instance - only by a few feet tho - all he had to do was keep that last foot even 'on the baseline' to have been safe. But he was clearly inside fair territory - so 'out by the rule'
