Baton Rouge residents will have soon direct access to the nation's capital via American Airlines nonstop flights to Reagan International Airport that are set to begin June 1, airport officials said Thursday. Metro Councilman and Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport commissioner Cleve Dunn, Jr. said Thursday.
The airline will operate a morning flight from BTR to Reagan and an evening flight from Reagan to BTR daily, and tickets go on sale Sunday, according to a news release from BTR.

Sorry for those of you connecting through CLT during morning rush hour. Guess you'll be using the first level B3 or B4 gates while DFW and DCA flights on the bigger jets take B2 and B1.

I'm shocked that BTR got this service, but the politicians worked their magic.
If they open up the perimeter rule at DCA I can see some of these smaller routes going away in favor of longer, bigger flights.

Starts on Thursday.
I will be using this nonstop very often next year. Probably a good bit this summer too. Perfect time for me.

Highly unlikely that it will be sustainable.
Case in point, after Hurricane Katrina, BTR had added numerous destinations and not even a couple of years later, they were all discontinued.

What exactly are the regular flights to/from BTR?

Godsend for me. My oldest just moved two subway stops away from the airport. This will compete with southwest’s direct flight from msy

It's a once daily flight early in the morning between a capital to the nation's capital...at the very least you'll have a bunch of government workers going back and forth. I think it'll be sustainable.

Those flights (ORD, DCA, LGA, DEN) were all set up as MSY was unavailable...there was no intention to keep those long term.

I'm honestly shocked it didn't have it. It was always busy post-Katrina unlike the short lived LGA and DEN nonstops.
Looking forward to more nonstops to ORD when they finally finish the expansion that airport. That nonstop to BTR might be United Airlines though - which will be nice because IAH is fricking terrible. ORD is starting a $9 billion expansion and will probably make it the busiest airport in the world when it's done in 45 years.
ATL, CLT, IAH, DFW, DCA, and eventually ORD. I don't see any other nonstops to BTR for a long time unless we see a new hub somewhere in Texas. That's very unlikely.

BTR used to have a lot more direct flights than they do now. I actually love that little airport though. So convenient, very short lines

BTR needs to add a jetway to another B gate with some more seating. That little airport is surprisingly busy in B concourse during rush hours. It's a ghost town back there during the day though.
Can't beat being about a 4 minute walk to your car from the gate when you arrive.

With DCA being slot controlled, service to BTR comes at the expense of another daily frequency somewhere. The plane may have been full, but of the airline could make more money running a flight to a different location the service will get the axe.
I believe there's a subsidy for the first couple of years on this route. But if DCA relaxes the perimeter rule American would probably rather run a 737 to a place like Austin or Denver instead of a regional jet to Baton Rouge and Tallahassee

At BTR you breeze through security, pretty much no line.

If they can prove it's busy (and they will, likely very quickly), maybe we'll get a UAL to Dulles if they cancel.
Too bad that that Dulles sucks.

Nope. But they have recruited out of our team...

UAL has always been a distant third at BTR. DL has run mainline jets to Atlanta while AA has service to DFW and CLT on 2 cabin regional jets. UAX has run single cabin ERJ-145's to Houston a few times a day and that's it.
Nice to see them upgauging some of the flights with new (to them) Mesa RJ's coming into the fleet but I would think they'd need to see a lot of demand to put a BTR-IAD flight in the schedule. Would be nice to get the premium heavy CRJ-550 though

As someone who just moved from LA to the DCA bubble this is a godsend for visiting family/friends.
Or maybe it isn’t because of in laws
