We had a blue tick hound that got bit in the neck while pregnant, this was back when people didn't run their dogs to vets.

She slept a few days and survived, all he puppies did too

She had a knot the size of a base ball on her neck for a while

You should be able to shave around the wound determine rather quickly if it is a snake bite.

My Golden Retriever got hit twice by a copperhead when we lived in Houston, found it under her house the next day. Called the vet who told us to give her Benadryl, and by the next morning, swelling was almost completely gone. My knucklehead mutt took one to the snout a couple of years ago, just did the Benadryl thing again and he was over it in a day, although he still shows a scar from where he got hit.

ETA (both were/are 60-70#)

Depends on the snake.

If they get popped by a rattlesnake they aren't going to sleep it off.

Had an outside dog growing up and it literally got hit on the face. The bite swole up the size of a base ball but she lived. Probably 45-50lb dog. They are more resilient than you think.

How old is the dog? If its an old dog than i may not do much intervention other than benedryl, possibly some vet treatments to stop bleeding. If its a young dog with a long life ahead I may be more aggressive on treatment and spending. My lab got bit probably by a copperhead, gave him benadryl, he laid low for a cpl of days, then was fine. There was no bleeding and was hard to find puncture wounds. Other friends w labs and bird dogs have had similar experience.

Years ago in California my son had two miniature doxies who were snake it on their snouts. Both of their faces swole up. The vet indicated that they would recover on their own however suggested the treatment at near $3K per dog. My son brought them home without treatment and they survived and were back to normal in a week.

They are, but rattlesnakes will do them in. Pretty much everything else in the southeast they will bounce back.

Right after

I've had lots of dogs get bitten by cottonmouths, but the smallest one was probably 30 pounds or so. They all recovered fine within about a day with no veterinary treatment.

Dogs seem to handle snake bites extremely well. I wouldn't stress about it.

That'd be my take. I have a buddy with a small Daschund (maybe 15 pounds) and that thing cannot tolerate the presence of any living creature on the planet but humans...and has a special kind of hatred for snakes. He has been bitten a bunch of times including at least a couple of copper head bites because the idiot will attack anything that moves which is not human. He swells up and is sore but if there were 2 of the snakes he'd get bitten twice and not think twice about.

That being said the dog bleeding profusely seems counter to what one would expect from a snake bite, no???

That's the thing.

This vet is an after hours emergency room that won't let owners inside with their pets.

I feel like I am getting fricked royally because I can't put eyes on him to verify what they are saying.

If they are like most similar places if they pat a dog on the head it costs the owners $300. Scratching the ears will run another $300. They are a godsend when needed but they ain't in any manner cheap...and they are becoming more prevalent than ever before because they can charge for emergencies anytime they see an animal.

My Lab has been bitten twice by western diamondbacks...one about 2 feet long and another about 3 and half feet long. She didn't even quit hunting other than about an hours break where I made sure she wasn't going to react. Both times during dove season so it wasn't what one would call a crisp fall day...

I have been around a bunch of bird dogs who have FAFO about western diamondbacks...most pay it little attention other than looking silly all swolled up and being sore. It does of course depend on how big the snake is and how "violent" the attack is...supposedly the longer a rattle snake lives the less venom they will use to dissuade whatever perceived indiscretion they have suffered.

I think I would change vets!

Uncle is a vet, every time we had a dog bit, he'd tell me to fry up bacon and pour the grease over the food for the next few days, And take a Benadryl for swelling or any allergic reaction.

Hard to find a good vet these days.

The difference is this isn't my normal vet being after hours.

It's almost like on-demand services come with a premium.

Crazy.

Just got back from our normal vet.

He told us to take all the bullshite the other vet prescribed back to their office and get a refund.

He did lab work and confirmed he was bitten by a rattlesnake. I'll try to upload some pictures.

I had cocker spaniel/lab mix that was bitten by a copperhead. He weighed about 40 lbs. I just treated with Benadryl and dressed and cleaned the wound. He was down and immobile for a good week. The bite was half way up his back leg and the area of the bite never grew hair back and the skin stayed rough and dry around the bite location.

There was no other option because there was no way we could have afforded a vet.

What did he tell you to do, treatment wise?

Gave us some antibiotics, pain meds and a cream to put on it.

Said to try to keep him off the leg and don't let him lick the area.

Eventually the leg is going to split open to allow the venom to seep out so be prepared for that.

Watch his urine color. If it's dark like coffee bring him in immediately.

All in all he said he should fully recover.

Those places know they have you over a barrel and they act like shady auto mechanics.
