Since the roster got released today I figured I would start this thread.
FIFA U-20 WORLD CUP ROSTER BY POSITION (CLUB/COUNTRY; U-20 CAPS/GOALS; HOMETOWN)
GOALKEEPERS (3): 21-Alex Borto (Fulham/ENG; South Plainfield, N.J.; 2/0), 12-Antonio Carrera (FC Dallas; Frisco, Texas; 4/0), 1-Gaga Slonina (Chelsea/ENG; Addison, Ill.; 5/0)
DEFENDERS (7): 17-Justin Che (Hoffenheim/GER; Dallas, Texas; 6/0), 5-Brandan Craig (Philadelphia Union; Philadelphia, Pa.; 10/1), 2-Mauricio Cuevas (LA Galaxy; Los Angeles, Calif.; 13/1), 14-Marcus Ferkranus (LA Galaxy; Santa Clarita, Calif.; 11/0), 13-Jonathan Gomez (Real Sociedad/ESP; Keller, Texas; 6/0), 3-Caleb Wiley (Atlanta United FC; Atlanta, Ga.; 5/0), 4-Joshua Wynder (Louisville City FC; Louisville, Ky.; 2/0)
MIDFIELDERS (7): 6-Daniel Edelman (New York Red Bulls; Warren, N.J.; 10/0), 10-Diego Luna (Real Salt Lake; Sunnyvale, Calif.; 16/4), 8-Jack McGlynn (Philadelphia Union; Middle Village, N.Y.; 16/2), 20-Rokas Pukstas (Hajduk Split/CRO; Stillwater, Okla.; 12/1), 15-Niko Tsakiris (San Jose Earthquakes; Saratoga, Calif.; 5/3), 18-Obed Vargas (Seattle Sounders FC; Anchorage, Alaska; 4/0), 16-Owen Wolff (Austin FC; Austin, Texas; 3/1)
FORWARDS (4): 9-Cade Cowell (San Jose Earthquakes; Ceres, Calif.; 7/2), 11-Kevin Paredes (Wolfsburg/GER; South Riding, Va.; 6/2), 7-Quinn Sullivan (Philadelphia Union; Philadelphia, Pa.; 15/7), 19-Darren Yapi (Colorado Rapids; Denver, Colo.; 3/0)
Clubs weren't required to release players for the tournament, with Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Paxten Aaronson as well as the Chicago Fire duo of goalkeeper Chris Brady and midfielder Brian Gutierrez among those who will remain with their clubs.
Pukstas and Wolfsburg's Kevin Paredes will also stay with their clubs and only join the U.S. after the group stage, should the team make it that far, Varas told media.
Three alternates will travel with the U.S. to Argentina to train with the team prior to the tournament: Orlando City defender Thomas Williams, Real Salt Lake midfielder Moses Nyeman and forward Korede Osundina of USL Championship side Orange County SC.
Possible starting lineup:
Schedule:
USA vs Equador - Saturday, May 20, at 1:00 PM CST
USA vs Fiji - Tuesday, May 23, at 1:00 PM CST
USA vs Slovakia - Friday, May 26, at 1:00 PM CST
30 May – 1 June: Round of 16
3 – 4 June: Quarter-finals
8 June: Semi-finals
11 June: FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 Final

Is any of this indicative of future World Cup success if clubs aren’t required to release players for the tournament?

Youth world cups are generally poor predictors of future success. I read one study that looked at how many players from a U17 or U20 WC team would go on to have 30+ caps for the full national team. I think the numbers were 1.7 and 2.1 respectively. Mexico won the U17 WC a few cycles ago and I think the max number of full national team caps anyone on that team has is 5.

The France U20 team with Pogba is definitely the exception to the rule.

Who else was on that team? I think they knocked us out of that tournament.

Didn’t Mexico win it relatively recently? Or was that U17 or Olympics?
Regardless, they are in one of their worst talent droughts despite that. So while it’s nice, the real judge is how many clubs aren’t letting your U20’s compete because they are already 1st team players. This is the first time I can recall where a lot of our guys were held out, so that’s good I guess.

I think they won both the U17 and the Olympics relatively recently (~10 years).

Pogba, Kurt Zouma, a justifiably angry cat, Alphonse Areola, Umtiti, Geoffrey Kondogbia, Lucas Digne, Florian Thauvin, and Mario Lemina.

Is Paxton one of the first choices for Frankfurt? They aren’t releasing him, but the only game that would be a conflict is the Deutsche Pokal final.

With Frankfurt de facto eliminated from European contention it’s a trash move. He’s not stupid enough to self-sabotage a promising career but damn it would have been satisfying to see him tell the club “see you next preseason”
The biggest failure is on FIFA for not adjusting the calendar at all for the World Cup lengthening seasons. There is no more useless organization on earth

He's been one of the lone bright spots for OCSC this season. He had a great game last night against NYCFC.

As is tradition

I was gonna say after the goal Luna has been the best player since coming on, then he flubs a wide open shot on goal
