re: If this ends up killing the Bud Light brand, what is a comparable precedent?

New Coke would be it if they hadn’t relented and brought back Coke Classic.

I'm pretty sure New Coke was never meant to catch on. It was just a way to switch regular coke to High Fructose Corn Syrup without anyone noticing.

If it was or wasn’t… the traditionalists and faithful brand loyalists collectively lost their shite and it cascaded into a full blown backlash.

"New Coke" was the response to the Pepsi Challenge when people in blind taste test preferred Pepsi over Coke. Pepsi has a sweeter taste while Coke is a little more "spicy" (if that makes sense). Coke got scared and tried to change to taste more like Pepsi. It was a historic marketing disaster rectified only when Coke came out and essentially admitted they F'd up.

Bud Light is not going to come out and admit they F'd up because they CAN'T. The media and woke mob would kill them if they did. Instead, they will produce more and more ads to appeal to the blue collar folks and college guys who have always been their market and the reason BL has been the top selling beer for decades.

The difference between BL and New Coke is that BL doesn't have a "classic flavor" to go back to. The beer itself didn't change at all. The marketing did with their VP saying "all of you blue collar people, rednecks, and frat guys are beneath us". Miller Lite, Coors Lite, and most inexpensive light lager beers aren't all that much different in taste than BL. So switching brands is not that onerous a task.

One thing I am interested to see is if Miller and/or Coors frick up this unexpected windfall they've been gifted by foolishly putting out their own "woke" marketing in the upcoming months. One of the biggest virtue signaling months of the year is coming up, June. So you have to think BL is desperately waiting for Coors and/or Miller to put out their own woke marketing so BL can tell their (former) customers..."see, there is no alternative. So just come on back to us."

I will agree, Coke ain't the same as it used to be. When I was little, we used to get 6 packs in large, 1 quart glass bottles, and it had a clean, hard bite. Nothing sickly or oversweet aftertaste in those.

I do remember there being a patent issue, they basically had to change the brand, or else reveal the secret formula that made it taste different than Pepsi.

I kinda think RC in the can tastes more like old Coke, than anything else does.

As for brand-killing precedents, I think Levis is close. Plain old 505's that any guy could wear, working on anything. Now they make skinny jeans with elastic, if someone buys that by mistake they get tossed in the garbage.
