First, this trial balloon appears in late March, right after Trumps poll numbers soared pre-indictment
quote:

The next thing that happens is Trump pops higher in both national and early-state polls. That’s because Trump is the second choice of about half of the voters who support DeSantis. Which means that you’d expect Trump to almost immediately add >10 points to his poll numbers, putting him close to the 60 percent mark nationally …

The Republican establishment, which has been pushing DeSantis relentlessly for two years, would freak the eff out.

LINK

Then yesterday The Intelligencer openly speculated at why DeSantis would forego 2024. Which now includes Trumps continually rising poll numbers post-indictment, depsite entrance into GOP primary by another US guv, Hutchinson
quote:

What If DeSantis Takes a Pass on 2024?

LINK
quote:

His signature bullying of the “woke” Walt Disney Company is looking a lot less successful. And he’s facing a tough slog through the primaries knowing that Trump’s legal battles will continue to dominate news cycles.

Tim Scott, the apple of many a Senate Republican’s eye, and Glenn Youngkin, who has nowhere to go after his one term as Virginia governor ends in 2025, are probably the proto-candidates to watch if DeSantis takes a powder.

The GOPe appears to be floating their back-ups knowing Ron wont commit at this point.

I wonder if we get any other good alternatives or just cede the Presidency to the DEMs again with Trump winning the primary

That would not be ideal. We need a non-DEM and non-spender as President 2024-2028

Literally nothing points to that.

Hutchinson was never going to move the needle. He is a worse candidate than Kasich and that’s saying a lot.

It should bother Republicans that the biggest boost to Trump's '24 prospects came by way of Democrat political action.

Let him run later and do FL. I like Vinick out of CA for the GOP. He has done a good job as Governor. Just need to get a more conservative VP to sure up that vote, but he will do well with moderates.

Good point. We should listen to posters like you, DavidtheGnome, and Decatur who all tell us that DeSantis should be the nominee

I hope he can build a real campaign and political allies in key states.

I don't want the alternative to be Nikki Haley or Mike Pence

So 2 media outlets run similar articles as to why DeSantis isnt looking good for '24 within a week, and you think these arent planted stories by the GOPe or the DeSantis team?

Who the eff wants to start out their campaign with that type of press?

Either DeSantis is using this as cover, or the GOPe is trying to force his arse out. So they can legitimately and forcefully move on

I hate to tell you, but Trump won the primary the second he announced he was running. His base is too loyal for any other candidate to overcome.

I don't tell anyone the nominee should be DeSantis because I'm not sure myself.

What I post is something that should be common/obvious - everyone should scrutinize anybody asking for your vote. But any sort of scrutiny of DT and you get inane responses like yours here, but rarely any sort of debate.

Its the same playbook from 2016. They pushed Trump relentlessly thinking he would be easy to bury. When Trump became THE threat, they cancelled media that hosted him, created a fake Russian dossier, and spied on his campaign

They havent learned a single thing in 7 years

You get to own what’s currently in the White House while I get to enjoy the significant tax cuts of the Trump administration.

I just did a quick check and they were going to slide out Youngkin real soon. Suddenly they say no one knows him and he has no charisma.

So they are sending out Tim Scott
