So you can get in with just a copy of your DD214? If so I’ve been missing out on being able to take the family

Just tell them your going to play golf since it’s open to the public and just go the museum

That place is damn near Smithsonian level. Great museum.
Imo it’s much much better than the Smithsonian in DC. It’s a fantastic museum and fantastic kids with all of the cockpits and touchable stuff they have.
I don’t know why in the world someone thought it was a good idea to put the museum so far inside of the base, that’s the biggest issue.

Yeah same here. Was gonna take a little detour on my way to Panama City. I haven’t been there since right after Katrina and I wasn’t into aviation nearly as much as I am now.
May go see the USS Alabama again instead.

They had a civilian weekend March 25 and 26. I’m not sure when the next one is.

There has to be some kind of workaround. I’d pay good money to have a background check to get in like those quick kiosks passes they have at other bases for visitors.

What's even more asinine is that VHIC holders can access the NEX, Commissary, and MWR facilities.....
....but not the Museum. The frick?
VHIC also can't bring their families IIRC. cant sponsor anyone, not even your spouse.

Can a DD 214 get you in? Thought it was only active, retired & Reserve. I have my DD 214 but not retired so no ID.

I’m not a museum type dude. That place is really cool. Not sure it will stay that way without the civilization money coming in.

Pisses me off we pay for this but can’t go.

Yeah to be honest they could have a vendor bus people in and manage the background checks and what not. Idk

We visited the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Oh last summer. If you go, plan on spending a day. Six huge hangers of Air Force history/airplanes and the whole place is fascinating.

I have a fax copy that I carry for Lowes and HomeDepot in my wallet...

Damn I had no idea it was closed to the public. We have a July 4th trip planned out that way and always bring the boys to the museum when we go to orange beach. Last time I was there r they were restoring an old plane and an older gentleman was standing watching. The restorers asked the man if he was interested in that plane and he told them he used to be a mechanic on them. They helped him climb aboard and offer a hand. Was cool to see and you can tell it made that old man’s day.

Out of all the exhibits the ones I remember most are the little biographies of the early naval aviators. So and so was naval aviator #1 Somebody else was #4 Somebody else was #12 etc etc
True story, great, great grandfather was Naval Aviator top 10. Pretty wild how something from nearly 100 years ago can make you filled with such pride.

was planning to go this summer. I did not know about the restrictions. What a bummer.
I’m available for hire.
Just need a hotel room for two nights and a bottle of decent whiskey and I’ll allow you and yours (up to 15) to accompany me to the museum.
