Why are boomer parents so dedicated to the college scam?

Had a bit of an disagreement with my in-laws recently about college for my kids.
My MIL still believes college is absolutely essential and it would be criminal for us not to blow $100K on some pointless generic business degree with minors in beer pong and critical hate white people theory.
I have never once been asked about my college degree or GPA or any of that in a job interview.

People who are afraid to work with their hands believe college is essential.

It used to be a filter. If you had a college degree, it meant you had some intelligence and basic skills, and more important - you had demonstrated the ability to learn.
None of that is true any longer.

Correct, which is no longer the case.

It's entirely dependent on what sort of career you want to have.

Did she actually say to blow $100K on a degree?

Exact words? No
But that is what is being implied when someone is going to college without a specific career path.
Of course if your goal is to be a MD, then you will have to get the credentials and make that investment. If your goal is just get a "job", it's not necessary.

Get a proper degree and work while in school..my oldest grandson does both even though he's got a full ride for 4 years at Florida St.

McDonalds and Burger King have never required that information.

Because our parents came out of WW2 and wanted better for us.

If you are going into a profession, then it is absolutely necessary.
If you are taking gender studies or some liberal arts claptrap- then it is a waste of money.
People in the trades do better without debt. Plus they can get paid as an apprentice.
Or go to community college and get a two year degree in a technical field.
It depends on why you are going to college.

Most all jobs that people receive after college are by someone they know anyway. If you’re not goin to college to be a doctor, lawyer or engineer or a few other professions that require paperwork then it’s a waste of time.

Because they haven’t yet realized how much the world they knew has changed.

The older parents or grandparents are, the more likely they are to remember when a college diploma meant a good job.
In my case, I know that my current job track could have been done without a degree, degrees cost probably 10x as much as when I was in school, and I have seen a LOT of people pay a ton for degrees which were worthless for anything other than an entry level job.
College is a possibility for my kids but they need to know what they want to do with their lives and they may end up with the Great Value version of college to start with before transferring where they want to be.

Depends on area …
I use to recruit for a major oil.. we did not even allow students into the recruiting portal without a masters in geology and 3.0 undergrad … and 3.2 grad …and I can not recall ever offering a job to a person that did not have a significantly better score .. and these were just for a summer intern position.. we offered permanent jobs to the interns that exceeded.
But yes there are lots of career paths that do not need them..

I was a daddy's boy and he was the greatest influence on my life. But I saw what he did for a living by working with his hands. He was a roughneck who screwed pipes on drilling rigs with a giant wrench.

I didn't want anything to do with it. I went to college.

Because when they went to college it actually meant something. Instead of working in a factory, you were going to be someone like the doctor on who lived in the big house on the end of the street.
What they don’t realize is that now it is literally as meaningless as a Cracker Jack prize but much more damaging to the financial future.
