Is this common? Why are they hosting the south and midwest?

They have Bama and Auburn both playing in Bham

They started doing pod seeding many years ago for opening 2 rounds since it doesn't matter prior to sweet 16. Pods help keep some teams closer to home if possible.

Umm they aren't hosting any Regionals

Birmingham is hosting 1st and 2nd Round games. Are you new to basketball and the POD system? Auburn should no way be playing in Birmingham though. They are not a top 4 seed and should not be protected in the POD system like they are.

Bruce Pearl likely played a large role in setting this in motion years ago.

Every 1st and 2nd round site hosts two groups. That’s how it’s always been. 1st and 2nd round sites host 8 teams.

Pods started in 2002 to cut down on travel after 9/11

The 1st and 2nd round sites used to be matched geographically with the region site.

Now they place the 1st and 2nd round sites in any region to keep teams close to home.

This was the south region in 2001. Everyone played in Memphis or New Orleans and moved on to Atlanta.

It was WAY better back then. The 8 team 1st and 2nd round tournament with everyone playing at the same site was awesome.

I saw a regional finals in Birmingham back in 1997. Arizona, Kansas, Chattanooga, and Providence.

I’m taking Auburn with the points tomorrow no matter what it is

However reason they essentially got 2 home games as a 9 seed is bullshite and if I was Iowa & Houston I’d be raising hell about it

As I understand it, Bham was the closest first round site to Houston. Of course the 8/9 (Auburn )gets pulled along to whatever site Houston gets.
