2024 Compensatory Picks

This is from an Over The Cap guy after Day 1. Picks will change if Saints sign anyone that fits the formula and cancels out.
Update after Day 2, prior to the Bills signing Deonte Hardy.

Looks like things are cooling down for the night, so after Day 1 of the negotiating window, here are the 2024 compensatory picks that would be generated from the contracts reported to be agreed upon.
Update after Day 2, prior to the Bills signing Deonte Hardy.

For the time being, the Bills signing Deonte Hardy cancels out their 3rd round 2024 compensatory pick for the departure of Tremaine Edmunds.
However, that pick can come back if the Bills lose another compensatory free agent without signing another.

Keep in mind that whoever the Saints sign could reduce or negate those Comp picks.

I’m still trying to figure out how we didn’t get one third after losing both Williams and Armstrsd to some of the highest paid contracts last year?

Mathieu and Maye
Thought we deliberately signed Mathieu after the cutoff date so he wouldn’t count, and Daltons salary was 3.5. That shouldn’t cancel out a tackle and safety making 15+ a year….

I mean, ideally you don't really want to have a bunch of comp picks because that means you lost good players and either didn't replace them or replaced then with far inferior players or draft picks.
Not a good sign for the wins-losses column.
Due to our cap situation I would expect that to be the case this year. But I'm hopeful that they can hit a few gems in the draft and maybe a FA vet on minimum.

Comp-pick analysis: The signing of Tyrann Mathieu earlier this week happened after the deadline for it to count against the compensatory pick formula, which was a smart move by the Saints. However, signing Dalton in March, instead of after the draft, could cost the team a third- or fourth-round compensatory pick, since he and Maye together would zero out the Saints' losses. There is a chance Dalton might not qualify for the formula, based on his salary and lack of expected playing time as a backup quarterback. According to one former cap specialist who worked in the NFL for a long time, though, the Saints could still be in line for a late seventh-round pick even if Dalton counts against them, thanks to a point system built inside the comp-pick formula.
Yup. Andy Dalton cost us a third round pick. Front office is fricking retarded. No reason to sign him until after the deadline passed like Honey Badger.
Really needed that third this year. That could be a running back or Jacqueline Roy.

Need to try to keep those 4ths

We gave up 17 1's for Davenport and all we will get in return is a 4th.

San Fran has cracked the code on getting high-round compensatory picks for nothing.

You mean have other teams hire your black employees?

As for the Saints, they now have lost six compensatory free agents while signing none.
They can sign up to two CFAs now without canceling out any of their comp picks.

I see the Day 1 to Day 2 numbers went from 25 to 32. Isn't there a maximum number of comp picks issued each year?

quote:Each team can only receive up to 4 picks, as well.
There is a strict limit of 32 compensatory picks that are awarded every year. If the formula initially awards more than 32 compensatory picks, all picks ranked 33rd and below are not awarded, although the league will still recognize that those picks would have otherwise been eligible for compensation. (There has only been one exception to this: as noted in the Additional Rules below a 33rd comp pick was collectively bargained upon for 2016.)
