LA Illuminator - Laid-off EA workers in Baton Rouge allege retaliation for union efforts
Forgive my ignorance, but is a union really necessary for people who play video games for a living?

ETA there's a Seinfeld episode about this:
quote:
Mickey gets Kramer a job as Santa Claus at Coleman's department store, with Mickey as his elf. At Coleman's, Ned gets Kramer interested in communism. Against Mickey's objections, Kramer (as Santa) tries to educate a child on communist beliefs and is accused of spreading communist propaganda; Kramer and Mickey are subsequently fired.

Justifiable
quote:
Several outgoing testers told the Illuminator they were expected to train other quality assurance testers in the United Kingdom and Romania who were likely their replacements. In the months leading up to the layoffs, they said their workloads gradually dwindled. By the start of 2023, documents and test cases that Baton Rouge workers had handled were marked “EAUK-Only” or “EARO-Only” to reflect the location of testers in the U.K. and Romania.
Seems like a legitimate business decision

Imagine boot licking for a corporation like EA.

Activision-Blizard basically told their QA teams to shut the frick up because it's an entry level position they expect them to move on from.

I always laugh at people who immediately side with management over labor, despite the fact that they are undoubtedly closer to the latter than the former.

They probably chose Louisiana because it's a right to work state.

well the rest of whats involved here is a question i will leave for others
strictly as far as the workload involved in testing games, most here have no clue about it. its long grueling hours, yes playing games, but testing those games are a lot work, so they arent having fun playing them and every aspect of the game must be reported on, tested, retested, and then put into a report saying what works and doesnt work, what bugs must be removed from the game code, and then they start over at the beginning and go through every function of the game to be sure the new code doesnt cause any issues with the game.
testing games is comparable to the workload of cleaning a warehouse with a toothbrush, so i can understand them feeling used and underpaid. that said, many jobs suck and leave you feeling underpaid and unappreciated

How does this board feel about spending lots of money on entitlements?
Cause there is this disconnect with some people on here that love to relish in low-level workers being told to shut up and lick the boot of billion-dollar corporations that want to treat and pay their employees as little as possible, then whine when we spend so much money on entitlements.
Like, have some of you all never stopped to realize they are connected?

Theres plenty of work out there. As usual, you see everything in extremes.

Now that's a pot meet kettle statement if I've ever seen one...
Now unless you plan to come up with a way to fill all the necessary, lower-level jobs in society with people that do not need a livable wage, therein lies the problem you anti entitlement boot lickers need to figure out.
Game testing, for instance, is a critical component of a gaming company's success. It requires a lot of hours, and a decent amount of manpower over an extended and ongoing period of time. A single shitty, buggy game can literally kill a company or division.

Stop importing lowly skilled and educated immigrants and wages rise.

If we mandate a "livable wage" do we get to eliminate a lot of the welfare most low income people receive? Or do we have to continue giving them the welfare also?
BTW, most can get a "livable wage" now with just a little effort.
