Looks like I'll have to keep an eye on the road conditions tomorrow. US20 is closed between Corey and Arco currently, here's the notice.

quote:

Large Animals on Roadway on US-20 Both Directions near mile marker 332. All Lanes Blocked. Comments: US 20 blocked in both directions at milepost 332 due to several moose in the roadway.

Will add an extra hour of driving if I need to avoid the moose

Day 4: Sun Valley and drive to West Yellowstone.

No new snow overnight but no need, here's the wake up view from the inn I was staying at.

Headed to Sun Valley and again no huge lines. They were able to groom a bunch of runs so groomers were good early then it was time for the trees.

View of Seattle Ridge area off in the distance. Skied all of the trees here since they weren't touched and easier on the legs

Did a few more runs then hit the road given I had a 4 hr 15 min drive. Luckily the moose moved on from yesterday so was able to drive on US 20. Absolutely gorgeous drive through the first part

Then I hit flat land and Idaho national lab, reminded of west Texas a bit . Continued on US33 back to 20, then the drive started to get iffy past Rexburg.

Glad I made it through before the road closed due to wind blown snow. Made it to west Yellowstone, having a beer and food now

I already haven’t been able to concentrate at work this week, tomorrow and Saturday will be unbearable. Can’t wait to get to sun valley. I’m interested to see what you think about big sky, its currently my favorite resort (not that I’ve been to many) due to the varied terrain and the ability to get away from the crowds.

Sorry I'm not helping with your concentration problems by posting pics . Have you been there before or first time? What type of skier/boarder are you? Can provide some recs

Next two days will be big sky reviews, will let you know what I think!

No worries. You’re on an epic trip, just wish the circumstances that precipitated it were better. This will be my first trip to Sun Valley. I’ve only been skiing 4 times and consider myself intermediate. Mainly blues with some blacks scattered in. I’ve been reading watching videos of runs, and will have 4 ski days.

Posting a trail map for reference

This will be a perfect mountain for you then. Take the lifts all the way to the top and make your way to Seattle Ridge. They groomed all of the runs off Seattle Ridge today (Gretchens Gold, Muffys Medals, etc.) and the trees between those runs were excellent. This area will give you a good introduction to the mountain. They show as greens but pretty close to blues. The Mayday lift is slow and unless there's fresh snow you'll probably only try a run over in this area. Don't do firetrail or numbers, sunrise bowl would be okay as long as you're okay with steep glade skiing on your way down.

Ridge is a good run and is a great lead in to Upper Canyon and Lower Canyon. Those were groomed and fun runs. I have a feeling you'll like the Frenchman's lift and runs around there such as Graduate or Flying Squirrel. I did upper picabo st and it had a lot of bumps even on the powder day so probably not for you. Upper and lower limelight were pretty fun, that will take you all the way down to Warm Springs (longg run but then also a long lift up). The south facing runs are where the sun hit so they had crust underneath the powder, the north facing runs/bowls/trees were in better shape.

So yeah, Frenchman's and Seattle Ridge would be my main recs to start from and then go from there.

Great pics! You're clearly not afraid of cold, but your route appears to be I-20 based on the North ends of the southern states. Lows in DFW close to when you're going to transit Texas, etc., are in the 30s, if you're looking for something different. However, I'm never going to tell people to avoid Smoky Mountain National Park. Transit between Tennessee and North Carolina will take you far longer than most people expect, but given your mountain experience, you probably already knew that.

I was born in the Midwest, so I have a hard time wrapping my mind about what value NE, IA, MN, and Illinois possess. You're not at a camp in WI during the summer, so not sure what you're getting out of that. SD I have no informed opinion on.

Then again, what value is there driving across northern MS and LA?

I’d do the Southern route for the climate and food. I’d imagine it’s still pretty miserable in the Midwest right now. Not sure I’d do North LA and MS though… Assuming you want to leave DFW on I-20 to Jackson and turn north on I-55 to get to Memphis? There ain’t a whole lot to see on that route. All the good shite in LA and MS are nowhere near the interstates. You’re just going to see a frick load of pine trees 90% of the time between Shreveport and Memphis on that route.

If I were in DFW, I’d probably just take the shortest way to Memphis I could and then just drive all the way across TN. Once you get to Knoxville, you’ve got good options on which way you want to go then. I’d probably loop over to Asheville -> Winston Salem -> Roanoke. Get good Appalachian views and head on up through the Shenandoah Valley.

Day 5- West Yellowstone drive to Big Sky, ski day

Woke up bright and early and headed the hr 10 minutes from west Yellowstone to Big Sky. This was the worst drive I've had on this trip so far. Blowing snow, low visibility, and got stuck behind a truck where I couldn't see shite until I passed

Made it to Big Sky and got a close parking spot. They have shuttles that will take you from the free lots to the base. Not too crowded early, they got 2-4" overnight so great conditions besides it feeling like 6*F. Here's a view of the ramcharger lift

Took the swiftcurrent lift up and lapped a few groomers given the fresh snow and before everyone else had their chance.

Did I mention it was snowing and 15-25mph winds? fricking cold. Made my way over to the Shedhorn and Dakota lifts. The snow was excellent over here

Badlands was probably the best run of the day

Ended up skiing the morning with some bros on vacation and they showed me around. We ended up at powderhorn lift and lapped that a few times.

Madey way back to the base for a quick lunch, then took the ram charger lift and did Africa and Madagascar but they weren't great. Went back over to Shedhorn to finish out the day.

Drive back was much better than the way in

West Yellowstone has snowmobiles galore

On the drive back to west Yellowstone, a snowmobiler started to race me next to the road in my truck. He got up to 67mph, was pretty impressed

Eating dinner, will respond to above posts once I'm back in the room

I'd be in Texas around March 19th/20th, forecast is pretty inaccurate for that timeframe but we'll know more within the week.

I agree NE, IA, MN, IL have little value unfortunately I have to make my way across from Denver somehow . If I did IA, MN, WI, it would be for a few additional ski days just to say I've skied in those states. I've also never been to north dakota so even hitting the corner and stopping for food will check that off my list.

From DFW, I'd drive to Baton Rouge. From there, I'd spend a few days then make my way to family in Franklin TN. From Franklin, I could make my way across TN into NC (Charlotte area) and see additional family before going up north to NJ. That does sound like a decent option.

I finally am having to make an audible on the trip. The weather forecast is not looking good for this ID/MT/WY area tomorrow so instead of driving West Yellowstone to Big Sky, skiing, then driving to St. Anthony for the night, I'm just going to drive West Yellowstone to Jackson and ski a half day at Jackson Hole. Somehow was able to reserve Jackson on the ikon pass just now and they got 9" last night so I'm thrilled to get 3 days there. I enjoyed big sky today, but not enough to deal with road closures and potentially getting stranded in MT for a few days. Need Duke's input on this winter storm coming through

Here's the Winter Storm warning for Victor ID where I have to pass through to get to Jackson
quote:

...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM SATURDAY TO 2 PM MST
SUNDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 9
inches in lower elevations, and up to 18 inches above pass level.
Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.

* WHERE...Mud Lake, INL, Craters of the Moon, Emigration Summit,
Pine Creek Pass, Wayan, Swan Valley, Victor, Island Park,
Raynolds Pass and Targhee Pass.

* WHEN...From 11 AM Saturday to 2 PM MST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult due to blowing and
drifting snow, as well as low visibility.

*PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in
your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Day 6- West Yellowstone to Jackson WY, ski half day

Well glad I chose to audible and get over here to Wyoming as the drive was already dicey. Took 20 to 32 and that's where the fun started. Was like this for about 20 miles

I did get to see Bambi and her friends in the middle of the road

Started to drive over the Teton pass and my butthole puckered especially when I started to lose traction at 25mph on this 10% grade.

Made it over the pass and parked shortly after to take a bus to Jackson. Did you know they charge for every parking lot now at Jackson? Was a bit annoyed but took the bus and it was fine as it drops you right by the tram. Jackson got 9" within last 24 hrs so great day.

Some views from Jackson Hole ski resort. Top of thunder lift

I did Paintbrush, fun run

Found the fluffy stuff

Great run to end the day off Sublette

Skiing tomorrow and Monday here then off to Salt Lake. It's still snowing it's arse off here in Jackson, has been the whole day. Can't wait for tomorrow, going to try for the tram!

Day 7- Ski Jackson Hole

Sorry for the delay, been a bit busy skiing and moving around. Woke up early and got to the resort around 730am, got in line for the tram around 745am. Jackson had 7" overnight for this day and I'm glad I was on the first tram. View from the top

Rendezvous bowl was perfect

Skied mostly off Sublette and the Thunder lift all day. Found tons of powder

View of Corbett's

Left around 2pm, but had a great day especially with the sun coming out. Stayed at 49'er Inn in downtown Jackson and enjoyed my stay. This was day 5 in a row of skiing

Day 8- Ski Jackson, drive to Ogden UT

6th day in a row of skiing, legs still doing well

Decided to try the far right side of the mountain including Aprez Vous, Teton, and Casper lifts. 3" of snow overnight so great start to the day on some groomers.

Saratoga bowl was alright

Teton lift had great snow especially in the trees

Made my way over to Casper lift then Thunder for some powder tree runs. Still had the fluffy stuff from Saturday and Sunday, zero complaints. After 3 hrs decided I wanted to start the drive to Utah. Google maps took me off ID34 and that was a miserable 55 miles doing 25-35mph in this

It was snow covered, then slight views of pavement, then slush, back to snow, and more. By the time I got to I15, I noticed my truck was having difficulty turning. Stopped at a rest stop and the entire wheel wells and side of my truck were completely iced over... Used my snow scraper to get rid of as much as I could then had to stop at a car wash to remove as much as I could of the remaining ice chunks. Made it to South Ogden and ready for Snowbasin tomorrow

Day 9- Snowbasin then drive to SLC

Will add pictures of today later, someone left the hotel alarm clock set for 5am... But Snowbasin got 4" overnight so I'm happy. I'd just like to point out the overnight snow totals for every day of skiing so far.

Sun Valley- 14", 2"
Big Sky- 4"
Jackson Hole- 9", 7", 3"
Snowbasin- 4"

Every single resort has had fresh snow, it's been a miracle

Awesome pictures. Not a skier and not super fond of the cold and snow, but that part of the country is gorgeous no matter the time of year.

Do you have to go through DFW? If not, when you leave Denver, stay on 70 though KC and St Louis. Take I-64 out of StL to I-57 to I-24. That will get you to Nashville/Franklin.

Leave Nashville on 40 to Knoxville and then either 81 up the backside of the Blue Ridge as far as Harrisburg, or take 40 through Asheville to Raleigh and catch either 85 or 95 through Richmond/DC/Baltimore to Jersey.
