Make sure to thank Dickie V and Pat Forde, along with little Scotty for this shite show we are having to endure this season.
Secondly, I keep hearing that CMM inherited a terrible situation etc....which yes that is true. But CMM did a great job at making the best of that terrible situation. He actually brought in some decent players and I think he deserves credit for that. With that said, he has underperformed with the players that he has on the roster and its not acceptable. He gets another year, but if we don't see progress next season....Can him!!!

And how do you quantify that? Being more competitive? As long as we are under the threat of sanctions (which I believe, if they cine at all, will be toothless), we will have a hard time bringing in competitive talent

Baseball is about to start to so I can tune them out. We’ll see how they do next year before I draw conclusions. If you want one gimmie year that’s fine.

He'll be here next year whether we like it or not. I like CMM and I want him to succeed but I really have a lot of questions and concerns about what I've seen from him as head of this program this year.
Hopefully, my concerns will prove unfounded...won't be the first time...but I'll say this, anyone who thinks we have not underperformed this year is flat out rationalizing for a coach they want to do well. I get it, I've done it before.

I have some serious doubts now.

So to paraphrase your dumbass argument, Woodward has made a home run hire in every sport but just didn’t care enough about basketball to get someone suited to the need? Who do you think was going to come to LSU with the sanctions hanging overhead? Jesus couldn’t do a better job under these circumstances. Stick to things you are good at… and yes I do want fries with that!

We’ve been under the threat of sanctions for 4 years….

Wtf are you talking about. Youre a fckin idiot. I never stated anything about Woodward making home runs hires etc. I think he hired McMahon with the intentions it being a good hire. He could turn out to be, but I don't see it so far. I think Woodward folding under the pressure from the NCAA and Media and I think it fckin sucks for LSU basketball....that's all I said. But if you don't think there are any coaches out there that could do better than this then please stop talking, youre oblivious and know nothing about college basketball.

Kelly, Mulkey and Johnson were all relatively easy hires. Particular when you have a shite load of other people's money to hand out.
Give Woodward credit for seizing the opportunity with Kelly. He was a long time successful HC who knew his level of success was capped at ND. Woodward, though, had the ONLY SCHOOL in FBS football over the last 2 decades who had three different coaches win National Championships. That is a VERY easy brand to sell to a prospective HC.
LSU baseball is a complete outlier. The majority of the nation doesn't even know there is such a thing as college baseball. And while a few may equal LSU's support of the sport, no one surpasses it. If you are a college baseball coach LSU is a destination job. You don't have to go out an "sell" the job to coaches. They try to sell themselves to you.
Mulkey had no reason to leave Baylor...except for one. Louisiana is home. That, and the huge check, are the ONLY reasons she is here. That hire fell into Woodward's lap because one of the best coaches in the country happens to be from LA AND had a child attend LSU.
Men's basketball requires more study and effort. The program is not at the pinnacle of success, no really ever has been. And there are no LA native great HC's out there dying to come home. Making the right hire requires more than just a huge check. You have to identify the right guy.
As for the "scary" sanctions looming, that was no doubt a negotiating point to leverage LSU, but coaches looking to get to a major conference program with big resources aren't really concerned about that.
There were SIX SEC jobs available this last coaching cycle. Five of the hires were from the mid-major ranks. One was an SEC re-tread with Mike White going from Florida to a significantly worse program in Georgia. Of all of the mid-major coaches hired you could make a strong argument McMahon had the best resume. This wasn't just a "get anyone you could" hire. That was John Brady. But the reality is McMahon has not been good...even relatively to the low expectations for this team.

What.A.Joke.
LSU is not going to be hit with severe sanctions. Wade might. LSU won't. And despite LSU "fans"...well really just those who are "big basketball fans" for exactly 2 weeks a year...curling up in to a ball and crying in April, McMahon put together what should be a solid roster. Not top of the SEC solid. No one expected that. But a roster almost everyone who covers college basketball nationally felt would compete in the middle of a strong SEC and be in line for postseason play. Most felt the NIT was the destination, but potentially being on the bubble was not a far fetched thought. Again, that wasn't delusional LSU fans who thought that. But people who you know and read on websites you know.
What has resulted is LSU has been awful at virtually every aspect of the game. They aren't just losing. They are getting blown out game after game. Missouri went up last night by 11 at the 12:00 mark...in first half!!! LSU never cut the lead to single digits the rest of the way.
But hey! Missouri is REALLY good. They have a really good roster. They didn't have almost all of their team leave like LSU did. They didn't have to bring in a completely new team under a first year HC from a mid-major school. That HC didn't have to face these "circumstances"!!
Cue Charley Murphy: Wrong...Wrong!!!
I don't know. Perhaps Dennis Gates (Missouri HC) is Jesus. Missouri had NINE players transfer out. All they returned were the Brown brothers (Kobe and Kaleb). Gates had to bring in 10 new players. That probably comes as a little bit of a surprise to LSU fans who thought LSU was the only team in America this year who had to significantly rebuild their roster in a short period of time. I guess Gates didn't get the message his team was supposed to be terrible this season. So he, after being hired one day after McMahon, went out and began putting together his roster. He brought in 9 transfers. 4 of whom followed him from Cleveland St. The others came from powerhouse programs like Missouri St, Milwaukee, Northern Iowa, Garden City Community College, and John Logan College.
With a roster largely comprised of mid-major transfers, many of whom followed their HC to his new school (sound familiar?) all Missouri has done this season is be a solid team. They have blowout wins over Illinois and Kentucky. They are 5-4 in the SEC and came into the game vs. LSU last night off a 17 point blowout win over (then) No. 12 Iowa St. They are on pace to make the NCAA Tournament. Again, I guess their HC didn't just sadly accept the notion his team was not supposed to be any good.
McMahon seems like a nice guy with a lovely family. I have no personal animus against the guy. I want him to success because I want LSU to succeed. But the amount of people who come on here after every loss and defend his performance this season is ridiculous. He has been HORRIBLE in SEC play. The only team/coach that has been worse is South Carolina. Of course, they were picked to finish second to last in the league. So most probably saw that coming.
The excuses keep falling by the wayside with every passing game.
"The first half of the SEC schedule was really tough. But here comes the last place team in the Big 12 missing one of their leading scorers. So now we can really judge him. LOSS"
"Well now LSU starts to play a little more manageable SEC schedule starting with Missouri. Let's see what happens". Trailed by double digits for 28 minutes in another SEC loss
Maybe brighter days are ahead. Hopefully they are. But in a year where expectations weren't high. McMahon is failing to even come close to THOSE minimal expectations.

I agree with that!! His performance is not looking good so far. Hope he can turn things around.

Alt 26, I want to thank you. You have said everything that needed to be said about our basketball situation.
Its all on Woody and Mac.
No what if, what if, what if.
No excuses. They own it.

Thanks for taking the time to articulate the truth on all of this, Alt26. You are spot on.

Last night I kept thinking of the similarities of the circumstances of these guys coming in.
Unfortunately their respective teams have taken different paths and LSU ends up with the short end of the stick so far.

I hope so. But I haven't felt this bleak about the future of LSU basketball since at least the 10-11 season when Trent Johnson was finishing up an 11-20 season, winning a grand total of 5 SEC games over the span of TWO seasons. It was Johnson's third season. There were no signs of improvement. No excitement in the program. And seemingly no indication Alleva was going to make a change. Johnson stayed one more season. He had his second best season at LSU...with a 7-9 SEC record. That's how deep the level of apathy had set in.
I didn't like the Jones hire. Not because I don't like Jones personally. But because LSU was the ONLY major conf. school in America in which Jones was even a remote candidate for the HC job. That, in and of itself, should have been a red flag. However, Jones had a decent first season with a worse roster than what LSU has now (a tuba player starting at center. A 6'5 Shavon Coleman playing power forward). More than that, he signed a highly touted recruiting class (Martin, Mickey, Quarterman). There was reason to be optimistic after Jones's first season at LSU.
Ultimately, (and not surprisingly) it didn't work out. The 16-17 season was brutal (2-16 in SEC play). But at least you knew it was a lame duck year for Jones and LSU would be hiring a new coach for the next season. That was reason to be optimistic.
Wade came in and brought "juice" to the program. He had a decent first season. Not great. But decent considering LSU was predicted to finish last in the SEC before the season. But more than that, he had a tremendous recruiting class signed for the next year to give every fan great optimism. He reaped the benefits of that class by winning the SEC outright and leading LSU to its highest seed in the NCAA Tournament in nearly 40 years. Obviously that fell apart for off-the-court reasons, but there was always optimism over the last 5 years.
Today LSU basketball sits tied for last place in the league. The team is getting beaten like a drum night in and night out with no signs of improvement. But unlike with Jones and Wade in their first years there is no big time recruiting class to provide hope for next season. And unlike in 16-17, the last time LSU was this bad, this is year ONE of a seven year contract. Not a lame duck year where fans could at least look forward to a new coach the following season.
Maybe McMahon hits the portal hard after this season an completely revamps the LSU roster. As we've seen, a roster can be completely overhauled in the course of the year. But that "hope" is quelled a bit by the fact THIS roster isn't that bad. Again, not top of the SEC good. But surely not get dumped by 10+ points every night against SEC opponents bad either. So even if he gets a better roster it is hard to fully believe the results will be significantly better. With arguably the least talented rosters in their LSU tenures Jones and Wade at least won some, and competed in most. LSU is not competing at all right now, and it isn't far-fetched to think the roster might be WORSE next season.
If any one wants to give reasons, outside of blind optimism, as to why we should think the near future will be better I'm happy to listen
Posted on 2/2/23 at 11:58 am to Alt26
yeah I think we should re open some of those transfer threads last offseason, specifically the KJ Williams one for the "guys we were supposed to suck" crowd because that certainly was not the expectation then nor was it during the OOC schedule and the "sooooo much better than Wade" threads were running rampant
