recently had mine restored but not back to exact original. It now has a 350 Chevy engine. It still needs a few things I can do myself I just need to get it done. I don’t know how to post a picture
That’s awesome. I’d love to see some pics. I’m considering a swap but the one place I called said their minimum package is $75k and I’m not there yet. Lol.

I went last year. We had the passes to go up on the auction stage. It’s pretty awesome.

Funny my old man had a 69 vette with the 427. Had to sell when my brother was born back in the early 80’s. It needed to be restored but was in decent condition. Think he sold it for like 8 grand. He still kicks him self when he sees how much a car like that goes for at these auctions.
Real barn finds are getting fewer and fewer, and the Internet has increased the casual collector market 5X to 6X larger than ever with many becoming auto price savvy. Cars and Bids, Hemmings, Bring-a-Trailer, etc.. have developed lots of 1st time bidders and buyers. I expect those collectibles will stay up in price overall, but cool off a little over the next year.

It’s only Monday and the auction room is packed.
ETA: watching on FYI channel. I’m not there.

Bump
The ZL1 went across the block for $2.8M. Somebody wasn't afraid to take a chance on it. Hope it works out for the buyer.

Another auction your way next week is the RM/Sotheby's. The Corvette world is watching to see how the 1969 ZL-1 will sell. Est between 2.6-3M. A lot of questions have surrounded this car and its authenticity.

I remember back in the late 80's perusing through the parts books at the dealership and finding the ZL1 aluminum block still available as a part. Was $4000 or so. Don't recall if that was retail or dealer price.
To be clear, that was just the bare block.
There was a fair bit of stuff still available from the factory back then. I bought a new fender for a 1970 Olds 442 in '92. Both were listed, and I ordered both sides, but only got one.
Putting together a ZL1 '69 Vette would make for a fun car. One a guy could actually drive.
*eta-The buyer's fee means the buyer is paying over $3 million for it.

I am interested in Lot 847. 1967 GTO, gold.

It was my understanding they carried a GM part number in the catalog. A lot of race teams kept spares and there is no telling how many are still tucked away or where they are today.
Are these yours?! 69/71?

About the same colors. 1970 W30. Sold it several years ago.
Wouldn't mind a '69 Hurst/Olds...

There were the ZL1 blocks, used in both Camaro and Vette, and also Can Am blocks which were "race only" and never installed in a production car. The Can Am blocks had some minor differences including no provision for a mechanical fuel pump. I think they were cast in a different foundry as well. Reynolds perhaps? IIRC the ZL1 blocks were cast at GM's Winters foundry.

I didn't realize the Can Am blocks were cast separately at a different location, but I do recall the Winters foundry casting the production blocks. Did Winters cast the heads as well? IIRC the early ZL1 heads were closed chamber and then later went to open or do I have that backasswards?

It's been a long time since I read up on them so don't recall if there were both open and closed chamber on the ZL1s. I do recall the L88s, which a ZL1 is internally, changed at some point but don't know when.
Pretty sure the heads were all cast at Winters but would have to do a deep dive to find out for sure.

I've always maintained that if Ford could find a way to duplicate the bodywork of that Lincoln convertible as closely as modern safety standards allow and put it on the expedition chassis w/the ecoboost and IRS, there is no way they could keep up building enough of them.
