That is not saying much, believe me. Those were Press’ players FWIW.

Not only were they Press's players...Press was still coaching.

Then the money for players like John Williams, who hung out with bookies at the track as a “financial advisor” and was paid to his mom something on the order of 150000-250000. In fact UCLA had already bought him and then he got more money from LSU.
yep. I was a student during that time and personally saw John Williams driving a red 5-series BMW. John Williams, from South-Central LA.

I also saw Stefond Johnson driving a 280 ZX (or whatever it was called back then) and when he got kicked off the team, I saw the exact same car being driven by another LSU player.

Also, my buddy worked at a nice mens shop and Don Redden charged $800 (about $2000 today) to a credit card that wasn't his.

And that's just the stuff I saw, and I wasn't connected at all.

Just imagine all of the other stuff that went on.

I was able to see the Dale Era.
That was the most exciting time ever in the arena. Dale knew how to bring in a crowd and how to rile up everyone.
I only have good memories of his years.
His record speaks for itself.

You can say that, but Dale's 1986 Final Four run with an 11-seed was pretty legendary and remains so 35+ years later.

This is basketball not football so your so your roster needed 7 guys that can play as good cerebrally as physically. LSU was STACKED with smart players that season especially with Taylor running the point.
Then you had an All American big power forward that moved like a 3 wing player in John Williams. Redden could flat out shoot as could Blanton in the mid range. That’s 4 high end basketball IQ players at the right positions. Beating Kentucky to go was awesome.
Then Jose Vargas could flat out sky. There was Anthony Wilson and Ollie Brown as well.

That team was better when Jerry Reynolds had to leave. Then Tito got kicked off or the money fell through and Zoran got hurt.

That team with its full roster may have won a championship but I doubt they would have because the remaining players played as a team.

I always felt a movie or 30/30 should be made about that season.

The ‘87 team was loaded and was really close as well except for Keith Smart hitting that jumper at the end. Sucked.

There were several of them working for an Oil Field services company, not to be named, riding around part of a day and collecting checks… he was a big booster

Dale Brown and Will Wade are the same person only separated by 40 plus years. Only difference is Dale Brown had Ron Abernathy as his bag man, Wade did it himself.

Will Wade couldn’t hold Daddy Dale’s jockstrap.

Let us just say your memory is not up to your post.

Press could not recruit and was offered a future hOFer, but did not have the time to recruit him, due to issues best left unsaid. The better players on Press's last two teams are far better than his early teams, but no were near the top level of the SEC type players.

You do understand how we got Pete?

Money has been a factor in NCAA basketball since before the mid 1970's. The Kansas' North Carolina's and Kentucky's did not like the fact a number of other college teams got into the biting wars for player they used to get for a song.

I did some scouting for Bob Gibson in the early 80's, just say AAU ball changed everything money wise and the NCAA went after all the newer programs on the new frontier of college recruiting.

DO you ever wonder what Duke was not charged or that Michigan got a pat on the hand for their recruits that were all bought and paid for? Could be because their coaches did not call out the NCAA?

Bob and I talked about Michigan's fab five and how much money was paid, and we were only off by 30k. That is how much cheating was going on. And Kansas talking to Lester and getting him up there with the help of humm I wonder who? This was not the first time Kansas and their coach were caught red handed taking a play from another team.

Or like the Horford fiasco.

Dale Brown was light years a better coach than Wade, hands down and not close.

College basketball has one key position that can make or break a team and it is not the center spot.

Nikita Wilson that is all.

Also understand Jerry Reynolds rating is super high overall vs all LSU players except the super stars. Reynolds has great overall stats, and his long reach is why he has great stats.

If he did return to the 85-86 team and Nikita not been held out for a very bad call, there is not telling what the team could have done.

Being a season ticket holder at the team, I told many in Dec 1985 we have Anothny Wilson on the beach due to the depth of the team that would start on most SEC teams and he would be a career 1000-point scoring.

I suggest you go back and watch the film of the 85-86 team, Blanton did not have a great touch on the ball at that time and only becomes a factor in the last few games of the season.

I used to rebound for Ricky some in those days, just like I did for Don Redden. Ricky became a great shooter later, and that is after the 85-86 team.

I know and that was the only reason why Dale won that first year and then it was all down hill.

He went got Rudy in a packaged deal with Abernathy. That was freaking from Louisville KY. I forget the other players he bought.

yeah. Was there.

UK certainly did that.

Are you saying Dale wasn’t buying players in the 70’s and 80’s? I KNOW FOR A FACT that a lot of money changed hands by a lot of boosters and saw all those nice cars all driven around campus.

DB is the best coach in LSU bball history, based on the numbers. Super interesting guy and great storyteller.

He cheated too though. Friend of mine said he used to cash Western Union payments at a local grocery store for Ronnie Henderson. The more he scored previous game, the bigger the payout. Unfortunately players were getting paid and we still sucked. He had to go at that point.

All the blue bloods paid players. At least now it is in the open. MM will do well one day. WW never really had a chance in the tourney as I think he only coached 3 total games for us..suspended by JA for the other two years. Also, for that, frick Joe Aleva
