Heard cheaper to stay in Banff and visit Lake Louise during day.

We were there in June. We stayed three nights in Banff and two in Canmore. Visited and hiked a couple of trails around Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, spectacular views. In Banff and Canmore, we just walked around the towns bar hopping and stopped by a couple of breweries.

Skip Lake Louise and go to Moraine Lake instead. Consider staying at the Banff Springs Hotel.

Banff Springs Hotel
Looks like $500/night.
Any recommendations that would be less than that but still decent place?

We are going in July. We plan to dive to the Columbia Icefield Discovery Center one day; it's about a 2 1/2 hour drive, I think, from Lake Louise. It's about halfway to the town of Jasper. You can also book a tour that takes 11 hours, they may go all the way to Jasper.
We'll also do a lot of the activities in the links that HGG posted; wasn't sure there was anything, or much, about the CIDC in there.

Moraine Lake will be frozen in late May.

We stayed at the Mount Royal in Banff. Super nice and walked everywhere around town.

Banff is a big town. Tons of places to stay opposite side of Lake Louise.
Or you could just pony up and stay at the Fairmont.
