Thinking about doing 8-10 days in belize. 2-3 days in each area.
what everyones thoughts of ambergris caye vs caye caulker? Seems like caye caulker is more laid back which I would rather. Is it worth planning a trip to san pedro? Def want to do snorkeling, especially at Hol Chan. My daughter will love doing the snorkeling with the sharks and rays especially.
Def gonna do a couple of days in San Ignacio.
ATM Cave is a must, gonna do the Xunantunich mayan site. Also thinking of doing a day trip into the tikal site in guatemala. Anyone have any thoughts on that or how much bullshite it was to cross into guatemala?
Also looking at a few days in placencia and/or hopkins. I missed out on dancing with the garifuna in roatan but want to catch it on this trip.
Any other recommendations or must see?

I booked my Tikal trip from the San Ignacio Resort. We had a great guide who got us through the border at Guatemala without any bs. After you cross into Guatemala, you are required to have a Guatemalan guide, but the Belize guide stays with you the whole time. It was carefree doing it that way. I have heard too many stories of getting shafted trying to cross into/out of Guatemala without a guide.
ATM cave is the absolute bomb. What an adventure! And Xunantunich has the hand crank ferry that gets you across the river to the site. After I left there on my last trip, they found the tomb of a ruler. I wish I could have seen the artifacts.
I forgot to tell you that San Ignacio resort has a green iguana farm. And there are toucans there every day. When you are traveling around the forested areas, ask your guides to show you the wild parrots.

Caye Caulker is amazing. Great times sipping rum and Belikins at the Split.
Hol Chan reef is an absolute must. I've been snorkeling and diving all over the world, and it is up there as one of the greatest. It's been protected for almost 50 years so the amount of fish/corals is unparalleled.

I stayed a week in Caye Caulker. I didn't think it was that great. If I were going back to that area, I would try the San Pedro area or one of the outer atolls.
It's billed as being laid back and chill, and to an extent I guess it is, but the vibe sucks.
It's not an off the grid type place, if that's what you're looking for. It's very much a tourist area, just a really low rent one. Everyone there is trying to get their hand in your pocket.
Beaches aren't much. Food is fine, not great. Decent enough restaurants, but nothing that will blow you away. Ate lots and lots of ceviche. Some was pretty good. Ate lots of whole fish. All of it was called snapper, not much of it was.
The split was fine for a few hours. My favorite area was a beach type resort on the north side of the split. Can't remember the name.
Diving was really good in some areas because it's protected. Diving wasn't that great in areas that weren't. San Pedro area Diving was very good.
ETA: Belkin beer was great. They recycle the bottles so they are very thick and heavy. I always found myself trying to drink empty bottles because they felt full.

Caye Caulker was great in the 80s/90s... I quit going regularly ~ 2005, but went back about 5-6 years ago. We had a good time, but I dont have a real desire to go back...

How does it compare to ambregris caye?

Caye Caulker is small. Really not much to do there. After a day I’m bored with it. I love ambergris Caye, although it’s changed a lot in the past 7-8 years. There’s plenty to keep you busy. If you are looking for beautiful beaches, Belize isn’t the place for you. The second largest reef in the world doesn’t really allow for it. If you are looking for a laidback lifestyle, it’s the perfect place in the world. I’ve been going for 25 years. Will be retiring there in a few years. Exchange rate is 1 to 2 so it’s easy conversion. Everyone speaks English

Much bigger... We just mainly did day trips over there every now and then, and it was fine... most trips never went over there.
I agree in regards to setting expectations... I always warned people wanting to come that there aren't these luxurious beaches.. or luxury at all really

Im not looking for luxury and am aware about the beaches. Just want to find some cool stuff to do during the day and somewhere to eat and dribk a few at night.

Ambergris is probable your best option, as there is more to do... Cay Caulker is an easy, quick boat ride away if you want to check it out..

We did a guys' trip to Ambergris Caye for mainly fishing. We did go ziplining and tubing the caves while we were there. We stayed at El Pescador Lodge . They had great food and service.
