how to locate french drain pipe

I'm looking to put up a fence with limited space. That liimited space has a 4" corrugated french drain pipe running parallel through that space (at property border).
The french drain is vital for back yard drainage and I can't afford to wreck that. We plan to use an auger for post holes.
Is there an instrument to locate this?

The pipe will plastic but more importantly it will be in a gravel field wrapped in geotextile and you don't want to damage the geotextile. See pic. I think you will need to hand dig gently to find the geotextile/gravel and stay out of that area. Normally with a plastic pipe you could use a metal probe to find it but that would damage the geotextile in your case.

You would have to put a tracer wire thru the pipe, then use a low voltage tracing tool to put a small amount of voltage on the line and then spot it.
Most plumbers can do this.
It may be cheaper to pothole along your French drain every 5 to 10 feet to find it instead.

Take long thin piece of metal and poke to find the pipe. Start at your catch basin and work from there. Flag where the pipe is

Steel probe rod. Any plumbing supply place will have one. They are inexpensive.
