I’ve not seen any reviews on the re-introduced 870 or know of anyone with that has the gun, but for any built in the last 20yrs I would not touch.
Versamax is in that bunch as well. The engineers for Remington were complete idiots.
On I’d recommend that I have not seen mentioned is the Benelli M2 field. It’s $1200 or so.
My sons first shotgun was a Franchi Affinity and it’s been great.
I would not hesitate on buying a Beretta a300 either.

I figure the new 870's must be pretty good because there's no ranting and raving about how garbage they are. I want to see one in person.

I did that in lieu of a class ring.
Bought him a benelli Nova in bottomland camo.

i have a new A5 and it is very nice BUT it will not cycle the 1 ounce dove loads. it needs more weight to create resistance to cycle the shells. I have no problem with 1 1/8th loads.

Look into Stoeger. It's a subsidiary of Benelli USA.

Benelli Nova for a ~$500 budget
Winchester SX4 ~$1000 budget
If you live in the Deep South get it one that comes cerakoted. Surface rust is no joke in da swamps down in south LA

I have a Benelli M3 that I’m a big fan of. Converts easily from pump to semiauto

Or you can wipe it down after each hunt and don’t leave it in the case for long periods. But I know some people pride themselves on not cleaning their guns.

A300 and Montefeltros are nice guns as well but are chambered 3”. SX4 has the 3 1/2” chamber
If you can't shoot that half inch doesn't matter. I have a 3.5 and Ive never used it duck hunting. Only 3in and 2 3/4.

I have several Belgium and Japanese made auto 5s and my Japanese light 12 handles light dove loads better than the Belgium's as well. I have not shot a new one yet.my Beretta AL391 Urika 2 Gold literally shoots every load the same.

I was in a hunting club in the swamp. Boat in and out. I take care of my things and always wiped down my gun with gun oil and it always had surface rust. If you have some magic gun oil let me know the brand.

Stoeger is a wholly owned subsidiary of Benelli USA, which in turn is owned by Italian firearms conglomerate Beretta Holding S.A. So YES

I hunt in brackish marsh, boat in and out. Wipe down with rem oil and take out of the case back at the camp. I clean with clp when I get back to the house, which seems to be a better corrosion inhibitor than Rem oil. Although rem oil seems to work fine for several days at the camp. Most important is not keeping it in the case and making sure the case can open up and dry out from time to time. Gun is a beretta 3901 with matte blued barrel. I’ve had rust before, if I forget to wipe down, but nothing a little fine steel wool couldn’t handle. I also use a waterproof gun case.
Cerakote is great, but I still like the look of wood so I just keep up with it. My gun has plenty of handling marks on it though, it’s been through a lot in the last 15 years but I’ve been able to keep it from rusting.

Thanks! It was a layer of dirty rust colored shite that came off when I rubbed it down with rem oil. I also didn’t have a waterproof case which didn’t help.
