Hill Country recommendations besides Fredericksburg

So wanting to stay outside of Fred but not too far, 30-40 min away. Also looking for other things to do besides the vineyards and Fred.
Also would like to do one day of hiking.

Boerne, Comfort, Kerrville, Wimberley are all great places to stay, eat, and explore.

Kerrville is really nice. Georgetown also if you wanna be close to Austin.

Hye is a nice town about 15 minutes from Fred. As others have said, Comfort and Kerrville are nice too. There are also Airbnb's on ranches around Fred. Hike up Enchanted rock or go to Perdenales state Park.

Blanco has undergone an awesome transformation over the past 15 years and is worth looking into
- Blanco state park for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding
- great restaurant options like Uptown Blanco, Redbud Cafe and Old 300 BBQ
- Real Ale Brewery
- two great whiskey and gin distilleries in Milam and Green + Andalusia
- unique gelato and cheese shop called Oro Bianco. They use water buffalo cream - their product is fantastic
The Lavender Festival is a fun time - early June. And if you’re willing to go on an insanely difficult “hike,” check out The Narrows. Have to be very careful not to break trespassing laws but there is a legal way to get there. It makes for a very long day, but is one of the most majestic hidden gems in the state.

We did the Twisted Sisters drive north of
Leakey and really enjoyed it. We didn’t have time to visit Garner State Park but plan to get a cabin to explore that area next year. The Frio River is very low right now so no water activities.

Round Top
If you are just wanting to relax Round Top is nice. Very small downtown and a decent restaurant if you are not expecting a Michelin 5 star.

Bandera is a less commercialized (and cooler) version of Fredericksburg . If you want to hike, Hill Country State Natural Area is about 15 minutes from Bandera - some of the best terrain in the Texas Hill Country.

In Bandera have breakfast at OST. Old Spanish Trail. Saddles

My wife and I are staying at this place (Airbnb link) outside Bandera this weekend for the NY. I will report back on the stay, but reviews are stellar. Mucho Gusto Inn

I live near downtown Boerne.
Would highly recommend you visit.
Free roam brewing is my personal favorite local spot. Cibolo and 259 Brantley’s are our go to food spots. The Dienger has great breakfast and coffee.
Black rifle coffee is a cool spot to stop although the coffee is not my favorite. If you enjoy hiking/Nature, Roosevelt park and Friedrich park are only about 10-15 minutes from Boerne. Plus if you go that way you’ve got La Cantera ( upscale boardwalk type shopping and dining ) and the Rim.

Not to hijack, but would like to piggyback. Also interested in a trip out that way that could include a couple free-range exotics hunts for a family of four (after deer season preferred ; if legal) to combine with other springtime family-friendly activities in the area.

Exotic hunts are year round. A nice idea is to wait until closer to the summer when family can tube or play in the rivers and the peak axis rut activity is going.

I’m not sure about the hunting.. I still hunt back home in Louisiana. I know there are a bunch of exotic ranches between comfort and Kerrville. As for spring activities, if it’s warm enough, float the river. Either the quadalupe or comal. Tons of great nature parks within 30 minutes from me. Roosevelt, Friedrich, Enchated Rock would be the top 3. There’s some awesome wineries if you’re into that. Sea world in San Antonio.
