Denver is a complete disaster ATM. There are literally NO rental cars available.
It’s not isolated to Denver, either. This cold blast has fricked all sorts of things up. One of my flights canceled a few days ago because we couldn’t get potable water on the plane. Because it was frozen.
ETA: This was out of ATL.

I wasted a day trying to fly SW today. Total shite show. The flight was delayed by 5 minutes every 5 minutes, this went on for hours. We would get texts every half hour or so apologizing and giving an expected departure that was 30 minutes in the past. Their website crashed and was down for most of the day. People were waiting in line for customer service for 5 hours. We finally got on the plane only to have the captain come on and tell us that he had just "timed out". We were asked to wait on the plane for another crew, only to be told an hour later that the flight was officially cancelled. Then it took an hour and a half to get our luggage. We could see it on the carts through the window for 45 minutes and nobody was doing anything. I'm on Delta Friday, SW has nothing until Saturday, and F em. Generally I've been pro SW but that changed today.

I just don’t understand how they didn’t see this coming? Shouldn’t they know when their pilots are about to hit their hours?

This is not the issue in Denver. It hasn't been "cold" in Denver for several days. It's much bigger than the freeze event

Thanks for this whole thread. Good info.

It definitely was the primary issue in Denver 12/21 to 12/24. Delta was canceling flights because they couldn’t refuel their airplanes due to frozen fuel lines. That cold blast worked its way south/east. It’s been a shite show.

I used to be a SWA loyalist, but they've had a few incidents like this previously and the boarding group bullshite finally ran me off. I only use them when I don't have another option.

2020-21 pandemic cash flow decisions (ie, retiring SWA pilots) paying dividends now?
Open question...have no insights...sincerely curious how much restructuring decisions are playing a role in this?

Cool, this thread is about today.

My daughter was flying ATL to LAX today. Once she departed ATL, I found out her connection in Houston had been canceled. When she got to Houston Hobby Airport, the gate agent told her it would be at least 4 days before she could even attempt to re book. I was able to find her a United flight out of KIAH to KSNA later tonight. I hate government regulations, but they really need to start making airlines cover the cost of expenses for people that have to book on other airlines. Luckily, her United flight was only $450, but I will probably never see that money from Southwest. Same thing happened to me on American this year to Halifax. Every flight was cancelled and they basically said so sorry. American Express refunded my money. Rumor has it, it's the Pilots, flight crew and ramp agents that called for the sick out. They all need to be fired. You signed up for the job and agreed to the pay, don't use your customers as bargaining chips.

Yeah. Do you think today just happened at random? Or do you think it may have been a culmination of various factors affecting the operation?
ETA: Reference the ACARS messages (12/24) and company memo (12/21) I posted on page two.

Same. Got caught in it today trying to fly from Pensacola to Nashville to Chicago. Our first flight was 7 am. They cancelled our Chicago leg on our way to the airport and I only knew because I checked the app. No email, no text. We went to the counter and we got there to a line with not one single person working. All other airlines had multiple people working. We decided to get inside and try to talk to the gate agent. Except they didn’t show up until 5 minutes before boarding. When we explained that we didn’t want to go to Nashville without then knowing where we were being rebooked, we basically got told tough shite. So we said screw this, cancelled the Nashville flight and rebooked on United and managed to get home.
Meanwhile, the two Chicago flights that SW rebooked us on both ended up getting cancelled too.
Done for good with them. This isn’t the first incident we have had in the last couple of years but it’s going to be the last. I’d rather stay home than use them again.

I don’t think the pilots or flight crew had anything to do with it. There being a catastrophic lack of ramp crew to receive planes in dangerously cold temperatures due to a “sick out” wouldn’t surprise me at all, though.

Why is it pretty much just affecting southwest then dipshit?

Supposed to fly out of Nashville at 5am tomorrow on Southwest to Denver. What odds do you baws give me?
Posted on 12/26/22 at 8:40 pm to genuineLSUtiger
Very low. I would be checking on alternate options asap if I were you.

Because Southwest was the company whose ramp agents decided to collectively not show up to work. Reference the internal company memo I posted on page 2.
Southwest is the biggest shite show of the bunch, but it has affected everyone. I do not work for Southwest, but I had a full day of flying canceled due to frozen water lines. Lots of moving pieces, but you can’t run a show without ramp agents. I don’t pretend to know why Southwest was the least prepared of the bunch.
