Where does this compare with previous World Cups?

Backstory
Fox Sports’ World Cup final broadcast comes close to other highly viewed matches in the U.S. in men’s World Cup history. The 2014 World Cup final between Germany and Argentina on ABC averaged 17.3 million viewers. Germany won its fourth World Cup title in a 1-0 victory in extra time over Argentina.
Earlier in the 2014 tournament, ESPN’s telecast of the Americans’ 2-2 tie against Portugal averaged 18.2 million viewers.
What to make of the numbers
If you are a global soccer fan in the United States, you should be really pleased by this viewership because it speaks to the growing strength of the product. It is worth repeating: This number came long after the U.S. team was eliminated.
Certainly, the number is helped by Nielsen adding out-of-home viewership measurement in 2020, and keep in mind the viewership number Fox is measuring here is for the window of 9:42 a.m. ET to 1:01 p.m. ET. The actual game viewership (whistle to whistle) will end up higher than 16.8 million viewers.
For context, the all-time benchmark for soccer in the U.S. is the USWNT’s win over Japan in the 2015 Women’s World Cup, which averaged 25.4 million viewers on Fox. That’s the most-viewed soccer game ever in the US — men’s or women’s — for English-speaking TV. Then add another 1.27 million viewers on Telemundo. – Deitsch

Less than Michigan vs. Ohio State and NY Jets vs. Buffalo on 12/11.
