Per ESPN

quote:

Navy is expected to promote Brian Newberry to head coach, per ESPN sources, elevating the coach who has coordinated Navy's defense since 2019. An announcement is expected in the near future.

Newberry's expected promotion shows that Navy will be sticking to some of the principles of success under Niumatalolo. Athletic director Chet Gladchuk has said publicly that Navy is expected to continue to run the triple-option.

I was hopeful Houston Nutt could have gotten the gig.

And with that it looks like the college portion of the 2022-2023 Coaching Changes Board has come to an end

That's fine, but Niumatalolo didn't have much success with Newberry as DC after his first season.

Not saying Navy's defense was necessarily the problem, but I think it's weird to promote from within so you can continue sticking to principles from the guy you fired.

So you fire a coach - in the locker room - after 15 seasons only to promote the DC??

I know the academies have a lot of politics but good lord that’s bad
