Large downloads to play disc games

Is this a normal thing now? I just bought an Xbox one for the kids and plugged it in to test it out and play RDR2 which I’ve been wanting to play, and there is an 80+ GB download required. Is that typical or is it because it’s an older game?

It’s typical especially these days. Games are wayyyy too big to simply play off disc I guess.

A Bluray disc can hold about 25GB per layer. While BD can come as deep as four layers, able to hold 100GB, dual layer is the most common format.
The larger problem is that reading off of optical storage is, relatively speaking, painfully slow. I don't know exactly how fast a PS5 or modern Xbox can read optical, but it's probably around 200 MB/s. A modern m.2 SSD can read around 5,000 MB/s. Textures and assets used by modern games are far too large to be read on demand from an optical disc. And even caching large portions of the disc onto the drive is clumsy. Because of that, there's no real incentive to pack more and more data on a disc when download speeds for most people making large patches trivial.

Still waiting on my rural broadband.

Haha yeah, that's why I made a point of saying "most people" because I know how under-served less densely populated areas are.

yeah thats normal now.
if youre getting back into gaming make that a part of your initial plan. nothing worse than sitting down to a planned long session to have hours eaten off for downloading.
also do this if youre coming back to a game from a long break in case of patches.

In my experience, disk are basically keys now. They just prove you own the game. Everything is downloaded.

I have my kids update everything before we travel for the holidays.

It sucks man
Luckily I have fiber internet now but before if I didn’t fire up the Xbox in a few weeks then I’d have 5 hours worth of downloads and updates to do until I could play the game so I didn’t have time to play it or would
Go to sleep
It really is such a bummer

With the size of updates now, I’m surprised that modern consoles can’t be set to automatically check for, download, and install updates every day.

my PS5 automatically downloads and installs updates for my games. The only time it wont is if I dont have enough free space available. That's why I purchased a 2TB external hard drive that's connected to my PS5

Doesn't an external hard drive defeat the benefits of their special configuration of memory and CPU?

technically yes, but I don't have any speed issues. I make sure to keep the console cool with fans and it runs fine.
