Reminds me of this...

If I was asked to donate $10 a month in order for LSU to have the best recruiting class and help win a championship, I would do it no problem
The psychology of this is very interesting: a willingness to voluntarily give up wealth for a feeling of well being or superiority based on the performance of an athletic team of a state educational institution

They're angry since it will eat into their sweatpants and jersey attire funds.

I'm a UK fan, but i don't donate. These schools have monopoly money falling out of their pockets.
Coaching salaries are absurd. Athletic dept spending is absurd.
I pay $50 now for what used to be $20 worth of food. I have to look out for myself. Plenty giving to these schools.

We have a top three roster. Getting better players isn't the issue.
Agree. Maybe it will help buy out Day and bring in someone who can get all that talent to produce something other than hope and despair. He's turning you guys into Oklahoma east. All flash, no substance.

I started paying $40 a month to Iowa’s NIL fund this past summer. I’m just a fan trying to help a little. Feels kind of weird but also kind of where we are at in college sports too.

They’re not asking people to donate what they can’t, and it benefits everyone they know for their team to be good

I of course understand that the donations are typically not huge amounts. But it just seems odd to me that people are willing to fork over their hard earned money to a state school so that the school's sports team will presumably be able to pay more to athletes to lure then to come to that school so that the team will hopefully have a better record. It could be argued that is what every booster does, and we all do it indirectly every time we buy a ticket.
Maybe the issue is really why people get such a sense of satisfaction when an athletic team from their chosen school (which they may or may not have actually attended) is successful that they are willing to give their money to the school so that the school can then give to the athletes on the team.
