Avatar: The Way of Water already make $7M from Chinese advance ticket sale and is about to outperformance The Battle at Lake Changjin II at the same point. Best pre-sale number of 2022. I guess $600M lifetime can be expected if WOM is good. #AvatarTheWayOfWater???

It's definitely not going to flop...are people saying this?
It's gonna be gigantic. It may not surpass the original box office, but this movie will be huge. It will definitely be a theater experience that lots of people will want to see.

The first movie was a shitty, plagiarized story with fantastic visuals
and it set records at the box office
From what I am hearing, this is more of the same

There's a lot of people convinced it's going to fail. Many on this board

Overseas markets are more forgiving to movies with more spectacle, less plot, because the translations can lose some of it anyway. It's better now than it used to be, but at the end of the day doing well in China isn't an assurance the movie will pan out.
Just see the World of Warcraft movie. Did well in China, but failed in most markets and never got a sequel.

I don't get the hatred for it.
It's not like they're ruining an established IP with political nonsense

It will hit $1 billion easily WW, easily. Quite possibly much more. That’s far from a flop

Avatar made $250 Million on a re-release of Avatar awhile back.
It was always going to be a big sell in China, they like stupid shite. Especially if it shows Westerners as evil.

China going to make bank. You understand that Disney only gets to keep somewhere in 25-40% range for box office returns in China?

Never will get this. It looks like a boring video game. It did then, it still does now.
Millennials. What a bunch of weirdos.

Have a group planning on taking some edibles and going to see it

Why do people on here want Avatar to fail again? Is it “woke” or something?

I think you're full of shite. What I think you're doing is counting people saying they hope it flops as people saying it will flop.
There are at best maybe a handful of people that have said it will flop, and I think I'm being generous with that estimation.

It's going to be so much "more of the same" that they're inexplicably bringing back Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang even though their characters died.

What's the break-even point?
Posted on 12/8/22 at 11:58 am to UndercoverBryologist
No one knows. Never trust Hollywood accounting. The budget is supposedly between 350-400 mil
Posted on 12/8/22 at 12:00 pm to RLDSC FAN
I'm not convinced it will "flop" in the technical sense (be a financial loss).
But I do have my suspicions that the break-even point for all of these movies will be so high, and audience fatigue* will set it soon enough, that by Avatar 4 (if not by Avatar 3), profits will be marginal at best.
Edit: *I mean, who cannot get fatigued with repetitive sequels about these goody-two-shoes blue aliens that have no moral faults because they're "at one" with nature?
Like I said earlier, Cameron should flip the script and make it about the human Marines heroically slaughtering these hippies.

That's the projected cost for the next 2/3 movies total though, right...not just Avatar 2?

Avatar Boxoffice: China presales off to a great start
the entire country is in lock down so they cant leave the house under threat of being shot.
that tends to put a dent in the number of people going out to theaters
