Shipping Containers - Price?

Never thought I would think about possibly purchasing a shipping container and making a man cave or shed out of, but googled and found that you can get a 20 ft for roughly $1800? and a 40 ft for roughly 2,500?
Is this good pricing? Anyone have any experience with this type of project?
I would say we would be potentially making a mancave/patio/shed out of it....

For that price they are going to be banged up pretty good, floor damage and roof likely rusted pretty good. Spend the extra money for a “single use” one if you go that route.

Have done tons of research and looking, but no actual experience. Plan was to have something under construction by now, but housing market making me hold back.
Biggest thing to look for is single use /one trip/one-way containers.
Limits your chances of one with a screwed up floor, damage, or chemicals impregnated.
Some discussions with a local code enforcement (Ascension) weren't great nor terrible. Basically realized I may be doing/redoing based on what they want to see. That was a couple years ago so there might be some advancement on how they handle the situation.
Also, you will probably spend more per sqft than stick building. Obviously lots of variables, but I haven't seen a decent project that comes in under what a stick build will be.

You can get a new 20’ for around 7k. Used 20’ around 3-5k and used 40’ for around 4-6k. As mentioned the condition of the conex has everything to do with the pricing. We just store stuff in them not to weather sensitive so it’s not crucial. A lot of places will not let you look at them especially if they are @ a port facility. Delivery is several hundred dollars depending how close you are to the containers. Probably less than 2hrs anything more would be extra. We use our own trucks to grab them. I have bought them in NOLA and Hammond

Price seems too good to be true. Maybe 20 years ago that would have been right.

Get the insulated reefers, you can be in there nice and happy with a small window unit.

Got quoted $4,500 a couple weeks back for a single use

quote:There is a stockpile of containers in the US right now. I've heard importers used to pay 3k'ish for an ocean freight container rental and now paying over 20k (just for the rental of the container, nothing to do with duties/taxes on the product within). For that reason, empty containers aren't being returned to China and other places. That might be meaningless to this thread, but might be an opportunity to pick one up relatively cheap.

We've purchased several of them, cleaned them up and resold them. Both 20 and 40s.
If you're going to make a man cave out of one, make sure you have someone check the thickness of the metal because they take a beating with salt water and rust is always an issue.
They have a spray coat liner you can spray on the exterior and interior as well which works pretty well from what I understand. That price point is fair for used containers FYI.

Anything near $10/sf is going to be smashed arse.

Appreciate all of the feedback.
It is a "possibility"...and similar to another poster in here, if it seems like it would be more than building something then likely it wouldnt be an option.... but came across a few ideas that seemed to be "simple" and could add/fix as time went on.

The second one is bad arse. Hope you keep us updated once you start the work. Always wondered how they put a slope on the roof for the rain to drain instead of puddle and wreak havoc.

Yeah if we go this route I would imagine it will be something basic at first. We no longer have our patio area so this would allow for some "patio" along with storage etc...while acting as a "fence"/barrier for us where we would put this. If we can utilize something like this for "multi" use that is our goal.
Unlimited options though on how "pimped" out we want to get with it. Love the ideas we come across.

It is difficult to say whether the pricing is good or not without knowing more about the condition of the shipping container and the market in your area. Generally The pricing you have mentioned is generally considered to be good value for money, however prices can vary depending on the condition of the container and location. Used containers LINK / may be less expensive, but could require additional repairs or modifications. It is best to shop around and compare prices before making a purchase.

I bought a 40 ft. guaranteed wind and water tight container for $4350 delivered. I absolutely love it. I have it down at my secondary residence (deer camp). Currently, I have my zero turn, two four wheelers, my 45HP tractor with front end loader, and plenty of other knick knacks in there. There's still gobs more room to spare. I also like that it's rodent proof.
I love the thing so much, I'm trying to talk my wife into getting a once used one here at the house.
ETA: What Albert above said is true, in regards to prices. Shop around.
