High Press vs highly technical team

Hopefully Berhalter learned today that that may not be a wise move. This ain’t Costa Rica.

On point.
Dutch we’re happy to sit back on their third and pick their moments and be clinical in the final third.

We were hopelessly naïve tactically. The Dutch dared us to press them and also dared us to work through their low-block, thinking that we wouldn't be able to work through a final pass. And they were right for the most part.

….which makes it necessary for us to take shots when we have the chance instead of looking for that extra pass that we so often like to do.

Exactly. We aren't hesitant around the box for a specific purpose either. We haven't carved out any real chances through patient build-up play. Our players are geared toward playing a faster game, yet they constantly slowed the pace of the game around the 18.

Hopefully, we learned to never schedule friendlies against concacaf teams.
We need to play the best.
Concacaf blows.

Imagine if Pulisic buries that early chance. Imagine if Adams doesn’t inexplicably lose his mark for the first time in the WC just 10 minutes into the game. If these bad bounces go our way then the game completely changes.
We created by far more attacking entries into the final third than the Dutch. If y’all watched the games the Netherlands played in the group stage they really struggled against the press. I think it could have been fine tuned, as we looked far too vulnerable on the break. I wish Dest and Jedi were better coordinated about who goes forward and who stays back, rather than them both playing a suicidally high line 24/7.

One of my biggest gripes. Our runs into the box aren’t frequent or incisive enough. This imo is the biggest weakness of GGG.

Our last four friendlies were against World Cup teams not from concacaf

Agreed. Seems like we were waiting for goals to present themselves rather than trying to create those chances. Robinson had a chance to take a shot in the box early in the first half…..I’m pretty sure the ball ended up getting passed off and ultimately cleared without the keeper having to do a thing. Robinson obviously isn’t the guy you want taking a ton of shots, but in that situation, take a chance. I’d rather give up a goal kick there than have them clear and counter.

Yes, just mean in general. We got 4 years.

Y’all are falling into the classic soccer trap of over analyzing result v performance.
This was not a bad performance in broad soccer terms. It’s not like the Dutch had high quality opportunities constantly. It’s not like we couldn’t create.
In the box creation was equal or even favored us. They just capitalized and we didn’t. You had adams, dest, and Robinson all just make school boy errors as far as tracking runners. And then offense we just don’t have a number nine. It’s very hard to score goals with a black hole at 9.
Which you can definitely put on Gregg in the sense that he failed to find a fit for the NT. But it’s not “tactics”

Nah, I’m analyzing how The Netherlands broke us down for their first goal.

And if Adams tracks his guy or Depay doesn’t hit a great one time shot it’s fine.
The Dutch got one really good break off the press in the first half. They scored on it because our best player fell asleep defensively and they had a good finish. We created a much better opportunity that our star did not finish.
That’s the game.

Pulisic has to finish. Haji was 1 on 1 with the keeper. It was a team that can finish vs one that can’t.

I don't think the bad luck on Pulisic's finish or Adams not being goalside of Memphis excludes our naivety. No team can play mistake-free football at this level. You have to take advantage of periods of controlling the ball, as the US was doing during the first 15 minutes of the game, or else be subject to the other team creating something.

We didn’t take advantage of our opportunities and they were clinical on theirs. That ended up being the difference imo, and not some larger overarching tactical mismanagement/genius by the coaches.

This seems a very charitable view of how that game went.
Yes it would have been a different game if we had taken advantage of an unbelievable gift in the first five minutes and Tyler Adams had hustled on that first goal. But do you honestly believe that was the difference in the game? From my viewing, the Dutch were the far superior side and would win that game 7 out of 10 times, even if we put away that first chance.

Right but that’s kind of the whole point? You can’t play mistake free football. And we didn’t and the Dutch didn’t. We each made about 5-6 mistakes that led to chances. The he dutch scored on three and we scored on one.
The Dutch strategy didn’t work because it was some tactical pantsing, it worked because it put the teams on relatively equal footing and they were clinical.
The major mistake wasn’t tactical, it was starting ferraira. Who was a blank hole when we were really on top of the game in the first half, and had the deciding giveaway for the second goal.

Based on what exactly? Expected goals favored U.S in the first half as did every other major stat.
I think some of you are biased against the US and being reactionary. It really was as simple as them being clinical and is making silly defensive lapses. And our complete lack of a nine

Uh, yeah.
We have shown that we can bunker and play elite national team D this tournament. NED is a defense-counter team under LvG. If we go up 1-0 they would have had major issues and wouldn't have gotten the fast break opportunity for their first goal.
