I think Saban was always going to eventually be a NFL head coach.

The bigger what if in that situation is what if he signs Drew Brees or Alabama hires Rich Rod.

People seem to think Saban failed miserably in the NFL but he actually didn’t. He took a 4-12 team and went 9-7 in his first year then took a step back. Given more time he probably works out and if Bama hires Rich Rod he isn’t leaving Miami.

This one is the impetus. Bama had 1 title at that point, and LSU beat them in their place. It had set LSU up for a potential dominant run of its own, and then Bama undeservedly got into the game instead of OSU.

That was the start of the end of Les Miles' era. Had LSU just struggled a little rather than getting blown out, how different things would have been the past decade.
