I'm looking at getting some insulated boots to hunt in Louisiana with. I know at coldest its usually around 35-40 degrees sometimes a little colder so I was wondering what level of insulation I should get. I'm thinking around 400g insulated boots from LaCrosse. Or do I need more? Thoughts?

I’ve always found 800g lacrosse a good all around boot… but still not the greatest for a long sit in the stand on a cold day. I bought some 1600g lacrosse and I’ll probably never get anything less in the future. Rubber boots don’t insulate that well. Only downside is size and weight, but I can use the exercise.

This is me. I wear the grange all year. Yeah, my feet get cold, that’s maybe 3-5 times a year it’s that cold.

Yeah I'm looking at some of LaCrosse leather boots that are insulated. I already have some non-insulated rubber boots and wanted to get something for the cold weather.

Boot blankets are the answer.

I was just out hunting between 0 and 35 degrees for a week. I wore uninsulated leather hiking boots and wool socks and my feet were fine. I actually never even put on blankets.

If your feet are cold and not wet or exposed, you likely should focus on your core temperature. All the insulated boot on earth won't save your feet from poor core temp control. Heavy insulated boots will yield you some sweaty ice cold feet.

Blankets allow you to adjust how much insulation your boots have when you aren't walking, and it'll allow you to just keep whatever boots you already have. Wayyyyyyy cheaper than new boots as well. You can actually use your boots for more than sitting in a stand on cold days. It's an all around better solution.

I’m beyond baffled about keeping my feet warm. I have a pair of Danners with 800g that I wore on the coldest days. Toes still froze. Last year I left home over the holidays with only a pair of Salomon hiking boots (uninsulated) and wore them. My feet have never been warmer. That’s what I’ll be waearing from now on. Ill just use some of the stick on foot warmers on the coldest mornings.

They make great Christmas gifts. Nobody thinks to buy themselves those things except for the 2 mornings a year they're freezing their asses ofd.

I pack these and change into them in the stand. Makes sitting in the cold much more comfortable.

This is really a better solution than blankets. Bonus is your boots can dry out while hunting. Several companies make some really badass goose down booties that pack down to nothing.

You can't walk at all in blankets if you want them to last. You can dual-purpose moccasins or booties for shite kicking around camp when not hunting.

Blankets are the lazy man's answer.

That's a good suggestion.I've got warm boots for myself, but whenever my wife wants to go hunting w/ me (usually 1-2 times a season), she uses the "Boot Blankets." And for those of you that want to introduce your children to hunting, "Boot Blankets" are a REALLY good idea. It's impossible to find affordable, well insulated boots for children, and if you find some, they'll be too small before season end. Buy a pair of "Boot Blankets" and you can keep their feet warm w/o buying a new pair of expensive boots every month.

I've got a pair that I use while mountaineering/snow camping.

I can walk on packed snow with them too. It feels great to get out of the boots and be comfortable yet warm.

If your feet sweat they will be cold. I bought a really nice pair of 800g boots on clearance after the season back around 2010. I think I’ve worn them twice. I wear snake boots 99% of the time in the woods with a good pair of socks. The Cabela’s instinct wool boot socks are my favorite. Merino. As long as they stay dry, my feet are never uncomfortable.

If you’re really worried, get you a pair of battery powered heated socks that you can turn on when you get to your stand. Or the boot blankets you can drop a couple of hand warmers in.
