A documentary film crew looking for the wreckage of a World War II-era aircraft has discovered a large piece of Challenger, the space shuttle that broke apart and killed all seven people onboard nearly four decades ago.

NASA confirmed the discovery on Thursday, saying its officials viewed footage of the underwater dive off the east coast of Florida.

"[T]his tragedy will forever be seared in the collective memory of our country," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said. ""This discovery gives us an opportunity to pause once again, to uplift the legacies of the seven pioneers we lost, and to reflect on how this tragedy changed us."

NASA manager Michael Ciannilli said it’s one of the biggest pieces of Challenger found since the accident on Jan. 28, 1986, and the first remnant to be discovered since two fragments from the left wing washed ashore in 1996.

The launches had become so routine that most Americans had really lost attention.

I was waiting in my car, waiting to go to my computer science class at SLU. I was listening to the coverage on WWL radio as I was a bit early for class.

The call on the radio was surreal. I remember telling the class what had happened. It was a somber day.

Saw the accident on television and everyone was pretty traumatized. But two months later we were telling jokes.

Like why NASA only had Sprite?

Because they couldn't get 7-up

Was standing in front an external tank at Martin Marietta in Michoud watching with my coworkers on the monitors. Many tears shed and jobs lost, including mine.

I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was a young whipper snapper and played hooky from school. I was laying on the couch watching it on TV.

I was in grade school, came home from school and went to bed. My mom said she’d never seen me act like that.
