I don't know anyone with a soul who isn't a complete blubbering mess as the end of that film.

It came out 40 years ago and still hits you like freight train for the final act, but especially the last 15 mins.

I don't know how he took an ugly inanimate puppet and manipulated the emotions of everyone who ever saw it so vastly, but Spielberg did it ( with a gigantic assist from John Williams) and I don't know if it has or will ever be matched.

Do people on the internet ever ask questions they want answered "No"?

I distinctly remember sitting in a theatre as a little kid watching ET and being confused that so many adults were crying. I thought crying was something you did when you were hurt or someone died.

I got choked up on E.T., but I know, for me, it's because I tend to mirror the emotions of male characters who are sad, crying or grieving.

I don't feel the slightest sympathy or empathy when I see an actress crying anymore. I think Julia Roberts' over-the-top snot-filled ugly cry in Steel Magnolia was the nail-in-the-cofin & cured me of any sad-girl empathy.

If a male actor is mourning the loss of his father/mother, brother/sister, good friend, wife/gf or dog, I tend to get the feels. Whereas, sh*t like Rose crying over losing Jack just makes me yell, "B*tch you could've made room!"

Pops Midnight (RIP) cried like a baby at the end of The Champ and was unaffected by E.T.

Your answer here is The Champ, my brother.

(ETA: or the other big performer in early part of this thread, Old Yeller is right up there with The Champ.)

If it was a new release, tunnel-vision right wingers on this board would post a YouTube link to a neckbeard talking about it making white males into villains.

I guess Starman would get the same complaint.

It’s the best movie ever made when it comes to connecting you to your childhood self. I just break down in tears at the ending. Not sure if it’s the most emotionally effective movie ever made, but no movie pulls off childhood innocence and ignorance as does E.T. The film is a masterpiece.

EDIT: And the fact Henry Thomas portraying Elliott didn’t get a Best Actor nomination, when he outright probably should have won it that year, is a travesty. Has to be one of the biggest Oscar snubs of all time, certainly in nominations. It’s probably the greatest child performance of all time.

I’ll tell you how he did it. Unlike almost every other film, Spielberg filmed the movie chronologically to get the best performances out of his actors so they bond with one another and the alien. It cost an arm and a leg to do it, but it was the obvious correct decision and really paid off. E.T. is Spielberg’s best directed film. No one else could have shot that movie that way.

I remember seeing either his audition or screen test, he stood there in front of those people and made himself completely break down, they were just like "holy frick kid, you got it"

I want to know about the tech that actually made ETs pupils dilate like they did.
