I just got back from the store and I'm convinced that Phil Collins' purpose in life was to make music for grocery stores.

I just read that his voice was heard on FM radio in the U.S. more than anyone from 1980-1989.

I did like his early Genesis albums like Trick of the Tail and Foxtrot, which doesn't even compare to his solo stuff that we're subject to.
Kind of like Chicago. I loved that band, but loathe Peter Cetera's sappy prom music solo ballads.

I bet Michael McDonald was also in the mix.

Well, if you told him you were drowning, he would not lend a hand.

I worked in a grocery store in the mid to late 90s that played tons of Steely Dan and Donald Fagen’s solo stuff.

The 1987 Michelob Beer commercial is a classic.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Belongs behind a drum kit.

Phil is a badass, talented dude. He could kill that drum set. However I always thought that his solo albums of the 80's were a bit over rated. His music is good but too mellow for me. ...But Seriously was perhaps his best solo album. I like his stuff with Genesis better.

Recently I checked out Rick Beato’s breakdown of Against All Odds, which is a beautiful song but I never realized how oddly and complexly it was composed.

I always thought Phil was mom music, but recently went through his catalog and really found a handful of bangers. A lot of duds too, though. In the Air Tonight with the most iconic drum full of all time. His early drumming was really interesting and by the late 80’s became really simple but very catchy grooves. I’ve come to respect a lot of Phil’s music more and more.
