What do y’all recommend as a sole motor for this little boat. It’ll be max 300lbs of gear and me + little kid. Little WMA lakes where I’d normally just kayak but want to take the boy.

There’s some off chance that I’d want to take it to coast but pretty sure I don’t want to pay extra for saltwater safe.

It has a little aluminum canopy where I may mount a couple lightweight solar panels. I have a full collection of good lithium batteries.

I paid only $600 for the boat with trailer so I want to keep the motor somewhat proportional cost-wise. But if there’s a higher price point where it makes sense for speed and reliability, I’ll pay more bc can always use a good motor.

Thx!

always go with the larger 50lbs 12v version, you will need that power when its windy or to fight the tides.

i mounted a scrap of 4" angle iron to the bow to mount it to the bow, and then i added a couple of scraps of 1x4 boards onto it so it had something to clamp onto

I had a similar setup for many years, for me I would recommend getting the biggest you can afford - it will be well worth it in the long run. As stated earlier wind/tide can really make it hard to get around and in addition it will drain your battery quick. The other thing is that it will allow you to have a much greater range than a smaller one.

To mitigate the price you could take your time and look for a deal on a used one. (also consider a saltwater it will open things up for you to fish in different areas for relatively light cost difference)

Mounting the motor on the front makes it a lot easier to fish when you are solo, however if you are going to primarily be with your son/others then it may not be worth it.

As an accessory that is really cheap you can pickup some rod holders that clamp/screw on. Depending on the location you can troll to your spot instead of just running wide open. After installing them I had a number of trips where I came across a random school of fish which produced a great trip that otherwise may have just been a day on the water.

Mount whatever you get to the port bow. It’s a lot easier to steer. You have more control”pulling” the boat vs. “pushing”. It doesn’t take much motor. Carry a push pole and a paddle.

Once you mount that motor you’re going to need registration to be legal.

I know you are thinking trolling motor, but I would find a small outbound. Trolling motor on the front in case it breaks. Been thru this too, this is the combo I ended up with. Trolling motor just isn’t enough power most of the time.

I’ll definitely get a gas one if we ever decide to go on bigger water (Keowee and Jocassee are about a 30 min ez drive).

But the lakes right by us are really small lakes, some of which don’t even allow gas motors. And none allows them for hunting.

Boat has oar locks too and we really just want the quiet of the lightly trafficked lakes. I’d be in the kayak, packraft or canoe but for the boys.

(The guy who sold it to me had a 9.9hp Johnson on it that I probably should’ve just bought. But I have to buy some damned furniture for wife before I can peacefully get away with any more toys!)

This is the 67ac Lake Oolenoy:

And below is one of the Tall Pines WMA little finger lakes. Don’t know acreage but they aren’t big. (There’s another one on a public WMA owned by Clemson right by us but it is drained right now. Much like its football team. )

I was fortunate enough to an antique Shakespeare trolling from a poster here. CGrand. It used to be his Dad’s. I also got a 14 aluminum boat from him. He offered it here. Going to post pics when I restore it. The motor must be close to 35-40 years old.

CGrand. Tigerdroppings is infested with great people.

30# Endura C2 with a Lithium battery for lighter weight is my 1436 rig for electric-only lakes. Battery more expensive than the motor.

Yep. Here’s a trick: make your boat a portable solar battery bank for your home or RV (aka second home) and get a tax credit. Of course I am not doing this, IRS. Lol.

I have a lot of nice LiFePO4 105ah batteries I need to use, as they’re just sitting there for emergencies and waiting on my next boondock camping trip.

The aluminum canopy on the boat could theoretically fit four of my solar panels. Too much weight and totally overkill. But the Tom Sawyer in me likes the idea of a perpetual bugout boat.

Will take better. The dude sanded off the paint and decided not to repaint. I like the junker look personally but I will paint it if I decide to duck hunt in it.

It’s crazy how there are literally zero dents in the whole boat. When you first see it it looks like it’s beaten up. Then you realize it’s just remnants of paint. I mean $600 w trailer. Hard to go too wrong.
