It was the correct call, Brooks never had possession
I’m curious. If 2 hands on the ball doesn’t establish possession, what does? Did it get bobbled? Yea, when the TE touched it from out of bounds. That was AFTER Brooks had 2 hands on the ball and a knee down.
Nothing that was shown was enough to overturn the call on the field.

Look. I hate that it worked out the way it did, but by the book, it was a correct call.
When a player who is out of bounds touches the ball, the play is dead. Period. The LSU player didn't show complete possession of the ball.
By the book, it was the correct call. Get over it.

I have never seen anything like that in nearly 40 years of watching LSU football. They had all the angles to say it was a fumble and recovery by LSU and still the SEC office in ALABAMA still gave the ball back to the gumps. This just proves what every team in the conference knows the sec refs are owned by bama.

I understand the rule but good God it's got to be changed. I think this is a great example of the reality that when you are making rules for a game you can't anticipate all possible circumstances. Nobody in their right mind intended for that to be the result of the rule but there it is

The ball was fumbled. If Brooks is possessing the ball when he puts two hands on it, then the whistle would blow the play dead and LSU would attain possession.
That is never the case with a fumbled ball. If the situation was the same in the middle of the field (away from the sidelines) and as the ball is fumbled, the LSU player placed two hands on the ball, then a bama player fell on the ball and pulled the ball into his chest, who does the possession go to?

if nobody is in possession, and an ineligible player touches the ball in bounds, shouldn't that at least be a penalty?
how can that work to the advantage of the offending player/team? he had already lost complete possession
again some sort of amendment is needed here

Thats what happened though. The line judge immediately signaled LSU ball.

But a couple fingers on ball while laying out of bounds does …..got it the most stupid fricking rule I’ve ever witnessed being enforced.

It's a bullshite call but brooks never had control.

The ref right there that signaled LSU ball thought differently

This is simple AF, and the replay refs made a great call. When a player is out of bounds, he is part of the sidelines, and when a live ball touches the sidelines the play is over.
I’ve never seen this called on a sideline catch or when a defender is out of bounds trying to defend a receiver or tries to strip the ball as he goes by. There’s many scenarios where the ball could be touched by an out of bounds player.
All of this is moot because the LSU player had possession with a knee down.

All you need to understand is Birmingham

He signaled LSU ball only after Brooks continued to bring the ball into his chest and possess the ball.
Replay revealed the touch.

Was that a live ball? YES
Was the Bama player part of the sidelines by reason of being in contact with it? YES
Did that live ball touch the sidelines? YES
The play is over.
But the LSU player had possession

There is nothing in the rule book about “complete” possession. That’s just made up.
Compare to the Kellen Mond play in 2018. Ball on ground. Player grabs ball with knee on ground (with one hand in that case). Play is over.
In this case, 2 hands on ball with leg down. Play over. Having a guy out of bounds knock the ball loose AFTER that changes nothing. That’s why the ref on the spot immediately pointed to indicate LSU ball. This was almost instantaneous. He saw Brooks grab the ball.
And the replay official changes the call on the field. Terrible call. You have to go with the call on the field.

LSU. This happens all the time. Just because a player rips the ball away from a player who has possession and is down, doesn't mean he gets the ball.
