And Democrats are sweating their asses off.

DeSantis may be first GOP gov to win Miami-Dade in 20 years

quote:

MIAMI — Florida Democrats are fretting over Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ popularity among Latinos, saying they are boosting his chances of becoming the first Republican governor in 20 years to win traditionally blue Miami-Dade County and therefore propelling his chances of a successful presidential run in 2024.

Miami-Dade, the state's most populous county, is 70% Hispanic. The last time a Republican governor won Miami-Dade County was Jeb Bush in 2002. Unlike DeSantis, Bush held press conferences in fluent Spanish and his wife is Mexican-born.

DeSantis is an “outlier” among Republican governors, said Fernand Amandi, a Democratic consultant and pollster in Miami.

“DeSantis overperforms here in a way that you don’t tend to see Republican candidates perform elsewhere with Hispanics,” he said.

So the key to his popularity? Listen up, GOP consultants. Maybe actually earn your pay and learn something here:

quote:

Some of DeSantis’ policies have drawn controversy and generated national headlines, including his support of the Parental Rights in Education law — dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” law by critics — and his move to send two planes full with mostly Venezuelan asylum-seekers to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts and other locations.

Samantha Ramirez, communications director for Crist, said DeSantis is a "fake ally to our community, someone who smiles in your face but turns around and threatens to bus Cubans to Delaware and spends his time flying asylum-seekers across the country to score political points. He acts like the very dictators our communities fled from, that’s why Floridians are ready to get behind Charlie Crist."

But those stances, say supporters, have contributed to DeSantis’ popularity.

“The key takeaway that I hear from Hispanics over and over again, is some variation of ‘he has cojones,’” said Republican strategist Giancarlo Sopo.

Helen Aguirre Ferré, the executive director of the Republican Party of Florida, said Hispanics appreciate a leader who “is unafraid to make decisions, even though it may go against the grain of the establishment.”

Oh, and by the way... even better...

It is not just Cubans.

DeSantis is polling high with almost all Latino sub-groups, including Puerto Ricans, who tend to lean more Democratic than other groups.

I've been hearing from the MSM for the past 30 years how the GOP needs to "expand the tent" "get less white" "reach out to the community."

Well buckle up bitches.

The Hispanic vote in Miami is different. The democrats played the Cuban issue under Obama terribly and alienated many. My dad's side is Cuban and almost all are Republicans and all have shifted more right in the past ten years. There is a difference between than community and the Mexican vote.

And what about the Biden administration instituting policy that announced anyone trying to reach the U.S. by sea would be turned away by the Coast Guard and those who were actually successful making it would have their immigration court claims summarily denied. Of course that was aimed in large part at Cubans, Haitians as well. Yeah Latinos of Cuban heritage in South Florida aren’t super big fans of Democrats as general matter from what I can tell.

Used to be. They loved Clinton. The Elian Gonzalez case and the way Reno-Clinton handled that was the first punch. Honestly, that issue probably made Bush POTUS over Gore alone. The shift demographically has been the Hispanic vote in FL over the past 20 years making it a tilt-red state.

More proof DeSantis is a RINO, controlled by the establishment and cannot be trusted. If he wins in 2024, don’t be surprised if he grows government, turns the country over to whackjob Leftist deep-staters in made up national emergencies, installs shitty heads of the DOJ/FBI, and does stupid shite like granting immunity from liability to major industry.

Trump is the reason he’s so popular , he damn near was close to winning Miami dade in 2020. The only reason why any GOP is having the success they are having is because of how successful Trump was in his presidency.

Trump was the reason why Desantis as Governor had the freedom and ability to handle his state how he saw fit. Another President, maybe even any other one, may have simply taken every action possible to keep that authority at the highest levels of federal government. Trump guarded against that. Pretty good of the guy actually, no matter how many buts , yets and howevers folks try to hard to knock it down with.

And I thought it was the constitution.

What are these powers you speak of? What power does the executive branch have to shut down or keep open businesses and schools in arizona during a pandemic like C-19?

So give him credit for not doing something he couldn’t have done anyway, but don’t hold him accountable for cheerleading and funding all the Covid bullshite.

You know what’s dangerous about this level of sycophantry? Trump is probably the odds on favorite for 2024, and without some sense that a second term has to be much better and there are no more excuses, why would we expect anything different in a second term?

Trump is awesome in many ways, but he completely fricked up too many major things in his 1st term.

I believe you’re in the at-large group that insists “Trump shut down the economy” so I guess go ask one of them where the power and authority that they wholly conclude Trump acted upon comes from.

And as I’ve noted extensively on previous occasions, there’s no genuine debate to be had with you on account of your absolute exclusion of the concept of opinion. You’ve already moved well beyond that atage and are to the stage of issuing labels like sycophantry (sic). I don’t see the point.

Your belief is wrong. I’ve never argued/suggested that Trump shut the economy down. I’ve agreed with those that argued he had no power to do so.

What I’ve argued is he funded everybody else (governors and mayors) so they could shut the economy down.

Next you’re going to remind me that it’s Congress with the purse strings, and so I’ll me thin there is a lot of history that establishes Trump and his direct role in flooding true country with Covid bucks. He even jumped through hoops to make sure his signature was in the stim checks. .

I don’t have a problem with you having an opinion. Not sure what your suggesting here.

quote:

You seem to take issue with me having an opinion.

BTW -
sycophantry
('s?k??fæntr? IPA Pronunciation Guide )
NOUN
a variant of sycophancy

I don’t see the point.

Perhaps you stop making me the issue and respond to the arguments I make. Explain how Trump didn’t cheerlead shutdowns, if you believe he didn’t. Or explain how the shutdowns weren’t so bad, if you think they weren’t. You didn’t even touch the main point I made.
