Playing the underdog role this year. I like it

quote:

10. LSU

It's reasonable to suggest no new power-conference coach had to scramble to put together a roster more than Matt McMahon had to scramble after leaving Murray State to replace Will Wade at LSU. It was quite the challenge. But McMahon convinced Adam Miller to exit the transfer portal and return to LSU, got Murray State stars KJ Williams and Justice Hill to follow him to the SEC, and actually assembled a respectable roster. Most are not projecting the Tigers to be a serious threat to make the NCAA Tournament, but it shouldn't be ruled out considering McMahon has coached in three of the past four.

I’m hammering the Vegas over in wins. We’re going to surprise a lot of people this year.

A&M was very mediocre until they got red hot in February and rode that to the NIT championship game. Unexpected hot streaks don’t always carry over to the next season. Ask Oregon St last season. Williams is a good coach, but I’ll take a wait and see approach with A&M.

10 is reasonable for LSU, though I would pick them 7th. I think their roster is as good (maybe better) than Florida and Mississippi St, and I believe in McMahon more than their new HCs. Ole Miss’s roster is nothing special

10th is fair but I think we finish higher. Gotta keep expectations realistic for MM in year one and idk who is going to carry the load on offense

This is a rebuilding year for LSU basketball. Maybe we'll got hot before the SEC tourney.

Much like Kelly, he did a hell of a job putting together a formidable roster considering the circumstances. I'll follow the B-ball team, but I'm still pissed about the Wade situation. I won't make it to the PMAC until I'm over it.

This is a reasonable prediction. It seems bad, but usually 10th is only a game or 2 behind 6th.

Honestly we don’t know what Adam miller is right now, we don’t know how good ward is. But we don’t really project as a prolific offense. We might be fairly tough again defensively. we might lack a little talent depth at the 5. KJ has got to stay healthy and out of foul trouble. I think 7-10 conference wins, probably an NIT team, but we’ll probably be on the bubble late

Woodward better hope we make the tourney - fired a perennial tournament coach the day the freaking allegations came out. Sabotaging the team.

Really can’t stand that fatass.

Fact is that he coached LSU in the NCAA Tournament twice. Is 2 “perennial?”

I stopped really caring about these polls years ago, but I have to say that for whatever any of these things are worth, I really don't understand the extremely low expectations here. I don't view LSU as a threat to win a national championship this year, but there are some really talented players from the freshman class, to a couple of returning players, and the transfers. I see an NCAA tournament team here, even if it's as a 9 or 10 seed. McMahon has proven his abilities as a coach, and having two of his guys from Murray State who already know his system, should help to expedite the process of building chemistry.

Person you should be most pissed at is Wade himself.

Pretty much every team slotted ahead of us has all that, too.

Yeah, that's what really chapped my arse. The way Woodward colluded with the NCAA and timing the release of the allegations for maximum damage was really a low blow to the fans and team. You could have fired WW after the tournament but Woodward and the NCAA had to get the kids involved for maximum damage. That really hurt. It also hurts that we can't see what was going to be CWWs best recruiting class coming in this season. They would have been projected 1 or 2 on this list if CWW does not get fired.

With that said I'm truly cheering for CMM's success.

The Murray St. transfers together averaged a little over 40pts/game last year. I have a feeling there will be enough offense on this team.

I also think McMahon having Hill and Williams will help this team bond quicker than a normal year with a lot of turnover.

In college basketball especially expectations can fluctuate wildly year to year, and are largely dependent upon the roster/schedule/strength of the other teams in your conference. It is unreasonable to simply say expectations should be low this season just because it is McMahon's first year. LSU doesn't have a bad roster.

Now, it is unreasonable to EXPECT LSU to finish in the top 4 of the SEC. But once you get past the presumed first four (Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Auburn) there is probably not a lot separating teams 5-11 or so. Alabama is a reasonable 5th pick, but there are some questions about who is the real Alabama? The team that torched the SEC in 20-21 or the group that was wildly inconsistent in 21-22? The answer is probably somewhere in the middle. A&M comes in off a great closing run last year...but that was a complete anomaly from what they had been under Williams up to that point. Did they just get really hot at the right time? Or was that the start of things to come?

After that, you have 6 new coaches in the league. (or at least 6 in different spots...White moved from Florida to Georgia). I can't look at any of the group of Florida, Mississippi St., Ole Miss, Missouri, South Carolina, etc and say their rosters are definitively better than LSU's (maybe Florida)

McMahon is new. But unlike many new coaches, he's brought the core of his Murray St. team with him. A Murray St. team that was arguably the best mid-major team in the country last season. The adjustment for the MSU players to McMahon's program/style won't be steep. He then has some talented LSU players who stayed. Finally, a lot of people may not realize this, but LSU had a top 20 recruiting class and top 20 class overall once the transfers were factored in. In the SEC that ranked only behind Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas and Auburn. I'm not saying LSU is going to compete for the SEC title. But if you checked out on the program following Wade's firing and the mass defection to the transfer portal you've missed out on the fact McMahon seems to have built a competitive roster. This isn't going to be John Brady's first few years following the end of the Brown era.

Seems like lazy analysis to me. Looks they they saw new coach and roster turnover last offseason then quit paying attention. You can make a strong argument this roster is stronger than last years especially if Miller is close to as advertised
