I recently found a modern day successor to heroes of might and magic and my nostalgia is kicking in.

anyone know a modern version of the big board monster combat type games of days gone? Basically turned base strategy with units that level up and get "promoted" etc.

ogre battle, dark wizard (love this game), masters of monsters etc.

Ogre Battle 64 is coming to Switch Online, IIRC.

Tactics Ogre on the GBA was my jam. Ditto for Final Fantasy Tactics. That neither one are available on the Switch is a damned shame.

The Fire Emblem series might be a good fit for you.

Might and Magic Heroes VII and the 2008-2015 King's Bounty games might scratch that itch.

Age of Wonders III

If you want a Final Fantasy Tactics style game, then Shadowrun Returns and it's add-ons/sequels are great.

I do a replay of OB:MotBQ at least once a year. Probably my favorite game of all time.

There is a indie steam game called Symphony of War that has the Ogre battle unit system. Has FFT type overworld unit movement instead of the RTS part but it looks fun has great reviews and is only 20 bucks. I'm gonna pick it up around Christmas to kill some time. Sounds like it's what you are looking for too.

There's a game called Fell Seal - Arbiter's Mark that might scratch your itch.

It's similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and has beautiful hand-drawn backgrounds and a pretty cool character progression/"job" system. It's available on several platforms, including PC and Switch.
