Minn Kota Terrova Install

Is this a DIY project or do I need to seek out a professional?
Been mulling over a new trolling motor here in the near future and not sure how easy or hard it is to get the the detachable puck mount installed properly and line everything up where the front extension has clearance past the rub rail on nose. I'm a bit leery of having to put a bolt through the deck lip in between the rub rail and the hull. Maybe shuttle slide is the way to go?

Depends on the boat. I drilled 2 new holes in the detach mount so I could move it forward more on mine. I also used an aluminum plate underneath.

is the aluminum plate in between the the mount and the hull or is it a backing plate in the underside of deck?

I just did this. I ordered the detachable puck mount but found it unnecessary due to current mount on the boat (custom piece of rigid fiberglass board). I may end up going with a shuttle slide as I haven't tested it. Waiting for my donor to get me the remote.
Regardless, if you have basic skills, you can DIY. What kind of boat?

I did mine myself. I could get to the rear nuts but not the 2 forward nuts to backup so I got a 1/4” stainless backing plate and had it drilled & tapped to match the pattern of the mounting bracket. Held it under there and got all the bolts started, then just put locktite on them and tightened them down.
It worked really well. I take my boat offshore occasionally and it is rock solid.
To OPs question about clearing the rub rail, I got a buddy to help me hold it in the deployed position to line it up before we drilled anything.

Pretty good idea. Will definitely test it when deployed before drilling any holes.

Backing plate. I did have a stainless steel previously and it was heavy as hell and hard to install my self. Made a new one out of aluminum.

If my inexperienced self could do it you'll be fine. I grabbed the Terrova "quick release mount" at basspro and did it myself within a few hours. The quick release mount makes it super easy to remove it in case it needs repair or just to store and it has a spot for a lock so it's not going anywhere.
The mount comes with an outline that shows you exactly where to mount it on your bow and where to drill the holes

What john v said. Getvthe quick release bracket. My lund was hard wired from battery compartment to the bow so it was just attaching the motor to the bow.
There are lots of you tube videos showing examples too

I have a shuttle slide, but realized none of the launches I use are steep. I should have just got the minn kota disconnect and used it amongst other boats. The slide mount on the trolling motor side tends to get caught up on random things at the camp when storing.

That's good to know. Generally I'm in favor of simplicity.

Also the Minn Kota brand plug kit is expensive but it is worth every penny. The hardware included to splice the connections is awesome.

Yeah I need to look into the plug options. Right now my trolling motor is wired into a puck that I suppose is the plug. Not married to that puck configuration but will need something close to the same dimensions unless I find some other way to plug that hole.

I installed mine with a shuttle slide but the power was already rigged from the factory not that I think that would be an issue since there were tubes on both sides of my boat to run wires. I probably wouldn't go with a shuttle slide again, not that it doesn't do exactly what they say it does but because I don't think I needed it. It was very well made if you have the desire to slide your trolling motor back a few inches when traveling.

Don’t forget about clearance needed for getting boat on/off trailer. I thought I did mine perfect until front roller got it.
