An NFL rule that I think is nonsense - forward progress to a receiver

So last night in the Colts vs Broncos game there was a call that got reviewed and overturned that gave Pierce first down yardage because of "forward progress"
Pierce came back to the football and he caught it in mid air and the ball was at the marker when he caught it. However his own momentum coming back to the ball brought him short of the yard to gain.
That seems to go against the spirit of the rule which is to award a runner going up field forward progress.
I see no reason why a WR should be given the benefit of forward progress before contact like this. It's a dumb rule and we have enough rules that benefit the offense.

Maybe that’s not actually the spirit of the rule.

Forward progress as a whole is a bad rule.

I agree with you. Should be where the ball is when his feet touch.

Allowing a team to kick a FG in OT to tie. No thanks. It’s time to win or lose. Go for it or go home.

I feel like you can't/shouldn't have this opinion and also be ok with the ball just having to "touch" the goal line for a TD. The play has to end with the ball either touching it or across the line.
As long as you also agree with that, you're at least consistent even if I don't like either of those rules.

I agree that FP should only start where the players feet land.
You don't get forward progress on a catch when a defender pushes you from the air to out of bounds so it's weird you can get it from a catch where you get pushed from the air to behind the line to make a 1st down.

Damn.
Matt Ryan completed a forward pass in that game?
I must have missed it…

That was the right call because the receiver was being touched by the DB. Had he not been touch he would not have gotten forward progress and would have been short of a 1st.

Yeah he seemed to be going the wrong direction in that one

Lots of rules in football make no sense. It takes 2 steps, a football move and surviving the ground to establish possession but the receiver gets forward progress from the ball’s location the split second it hits his hands? It’s nonsensical.

What about when the ball carrier is pushed back several yards lands on a player but doesn't touch the ground and the ball comes out. It's a fumble. But it he doesn't fumble the ball is marked when he started being pushed back. Not where he touches the ground

I agree it doesn’t make sense to award forward progress before it could possibly be a catch (when two feet or something equivalent touch the ground).
But what is being overlooked here is why didn’t they employ the immutable power of two sticks and a chain to determine if it was really a first down? Nobody can argue with the cold hard truth of two sticks and a chain.
