LSU has struggled to run the ball with the running backs this year, but it seems to be improving week to week now. Obviously Daniels is still the biggest threat with his legs and the offense is dependent on that, but I'm curious to see if someone emerges as the every down back we can depend on in big games.

We've got Goodwin, Cain, Emery and Williams. Right now, Goodwin and Cain seems to be the best candidates in terms of yards per carry:

Goodwin - 5.9 Y/A
Cain - 6.0 Y/A
Emery - 3.9 Y/A
Williams 4.1 Y/A

In terms of pass protection, Williams and Cain look a bit lost and we know Emery has had his protection issues in the past.

Who do you think will be the top guy going forward or will anyone even separate from the rest at all?

I thought one of Williams’ strengths was pass blocking?

Goodwin seems to be our most complete back so far but I have a feeling Cain is about to come into his own. Emery just isn't going to ever get there I am afraid. If he doesn't have a huge gaping hole then he just doesn't go anywhere. I hope I am wrong and he figures it out since he has been out for over a year. Williams is your blue collar back working hard every day and will give it his all no matter what.

I think you need to look deeper than just yards per attempt...Cain and Goodwin have some long runs that skew it.

Goodwin is #1 for now. Emery has looked good.

We’re still so early in the season that these stats don’t tell the whole story.

Like Noah can has 21/28 carries against southern and NM.

Emery has 11/20 Carries against Miss State.

And 1 long run for any of the RB will drastically alter their numbers

Williams is the pass blocker & 1st receiver out of the backfield but I believe they will try to get the ball to Emery out in space at least twice this week. Wouldn't hurt to do it with Goody, either.
If the hammy was more of a cramp and he's good to go your lead back is Goodwin unless/until Emery shows he's going to live up to his potential.

Emery will pop a long one. Watching from the lower, upper deck on Saturday, it looked as if maybe he was hitting the hole too soon, not giving his lineman time to open it. He will hit stride.

Until anyone sees something different. Its Godwin and Cain and everyone else.
Hate to question anyone's Heart but then I go with Williams and Emery based off all I've seen in the last few years now.
Williams is not the most talented, but I assure you he has as much heart as anyone on the team. If I'm coach I'm working him in the game when I can.

Cain’s long TD run had defenders who looked disinterested in tackling. Wasn’t really an impressive run.

RB by committee. Blue, Ware, Ford, and Hilliard sharing the load. Throw in JC Copeland for some blocking.

Yeah you probably right actually. I went back and watched the State game and he got blown up or missed his assignment on three different occasions in the first half, but he's been much better outside of those instances.

He's clearly the coaches choice for 3rd downs which would indicate they think he's the best option. And clearly the coaches know more than my dumb arse.

So, to that point, if you take out Goodwin's 47 yarder and Cain's 49 yarder, their averages are:

Goodwin - 4.6 Y/A
Cain - 4.4 Y/A

Which shows much more modest numbers, but still leading Williams and Emery. But I guess the point remains that we don't have a lead back yet, and will we ever get one?

Goodwin has been without a doubt the best rusher for LSU early in the season. Best combination of vision, speed, and quickness. He will be missed in the running game if he's not healthy enough to suit up.

I really liked what I saw out of Williams in the passing game last week, and he had a couple of solid runs.

Cain is a straight line bruiser that isn't going to make anybody miss. I think we'll see him used late in games against worn out defenses where should be able to pick up chunks up the middle.

Emery still looks like he's hesitant/catching up to live action.

Cain is 4th string. He didn't get a single carry against MSU, and he didn't get a carry against New Mexico until mid 3rd quarter when Daniels came out.

I'll keep saying Emery is due to break out. As I have every game since 2019.

Good call. I'll be looking for it.
