Thanks everyone, they canceled their trip and will go to Destin instead.
Appreciate all the input!

The construction barriers around every outdoor eating place give the city a great ambiance.

Yes you are. I would suggest taking a short Uber ride from hotel to their intial destination in the FQ if it's dark. Then walking around the FQ is fine as long as they stay on busy streets and try to walk near other groups when going from place to place. During the day, the walk from their hotel to the FQ is short and perfectly safe. I live 45 minutes from New Orleans. We've been down there with our teenage kids a few times recently: Hamilton Van Gogh day trip to French Market/Jackson Square LSU vs FSU Game New Orleans is still a wonderful place. The media and The OT make it sound like Tijuana or some shite.
Mike, I’ve lived here for 21 years, both my teenagers were born and raised here, my in laws have lived here via New Iberia for 8 years, my SIL and BIL with their 2 young kids live in Algiers.
There’s nothing we’re scared of doing.
I guess being white, middle class people does somewhat has its advantages

That whole city is the wrong place at the wrong time, and the FQ is even worse.
I had to go there a couple of months ago. If I’m at a red light and there’s no cars coming, I just go through it. There’s no cops to ticket you, but plenty of super predators to end you.

Always sit in a corner with a shotgun across your lap.

Yeah here’s the best advice you will ever get. Don’t go.

Should have posted this on the travel board where people are better with advice

Don't. AR-15 and 9 mil Glock. Pepper spray for good measure.

I didn't even think about the travel board.
You're absolutely right this is where this question belongs...

2 of my sister-in-laws are planning a trip to New Orleans. Having heard all about the crime and lack of police problems my knee jerk reaction was no way.
Well they’re soon to be your deceased sister in laws, so at least there’s that.

My only advice try and stick to crowded areas. Be back at the hotel by midnight.

Stay Uptown and take an Uber to the French Quarter. The area around the French Quarter gentrified a lot last decade but it's going back downhill again. Crime is up in the entire city but Uptown is kind of in its own bubble and insulated from the worst of it. Try to stay south of St. Charles Ave or west of Napoleon Ave.
This is the best advice.

I would not send two female loved ones into the French quarter unaccompanied
Why? Its been shoved down my throat for years that women are as good as men. Probably better.
