With kids those ages, you should include Manuel Antonio for the beach. A night overlooking the volcano will be something they'll never forget. If you think they can handle a zip-line do that as well.
I don't remember where it was, but they'll love going to the hummingbird sanctuary. It was unbelievable.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve
A friend of mine from college moved down there 20 years ago for a summer to do research for his doctorate. Loved it so much he never came back.

Don't skimp on the rental car. Some of those roads in the mountains are difficult if the car doesn't have what it needs to get up the road. My daughter found that out the hard way.

Just went with my family (two daughters).
We stayed first four nights at the Springs near Arenal (volcano, rainforest, hot springs, adventure, monkeys, sloths) and then the next four nights at the Westin Playa Conchal (beaches, golf, monkeys).
Perhaps the best family vacation we've ever taken.

Thanks. A friend who travels there regularly recommended staying 3-4 nights the the Springs and then the rest of the time near Tamarindo/Longasta.

Not sure where she was or how bad her car was, but we had no issues at all. We drove all over the Arenal, La Fortuna area and also Tamarindo.
We rented from Vamos, a highly recommended local company. Also, you need to get the insurance.

She was going up mountains in a rental car that didn’t have the necessary power to get up those roads.

Unless you plan on going back dont go to costa rica without going to monteverde

I think kids your age would like La Fortuna the best. They have some really nice resorts in the area and they all have cool hot spring pools, ride 4-wheelers near an active volcano, ziplining, an awesome waterfall, whitewater tubing, a coffee and chocolate plantation, and a walkable town with cool restaurants.
Tamarindo is a nice beach town. It's a great place for beginner surfers. I think kids would like it over Jaco or Manuel Antonio.
