Anyone ever experience a lot of mold in your BGE?

Ive never had this much mold in my BGE. It was completely closed but I haven’t used it in a month and it has been rainy in Houston. How long would you burn it off before cooking?

You might consider cleaning your grates after cooking. This humid summer is causing lots of issues with people who don't use their grills often. All mine were fine but they are getting fired up weekly at minimum.

Yeah I usually use it once a week but I was just out of town a lot.

I see some on occasion. Not that much. Brush off as much as possible, then let a medium amount of coals burn super hot until they burn out. Then give it another good cleaning.

Not really like that, but yeah I've gone to cook and found it semi-full with fuzz.
I usually just wipe it down then scorch it for as long as I've got before I have to cook.

I used to have that problem also.
What I did was cut about 5” off of a yardstick and put it over the top smoke hole, then cover with the ceramic egg cover. Open the bottom vent just a little and store it. Haven’t had mold issue since.
You have to heat the egg pretty hot to kill that mold, though.

I've had it happen. Just build a fire and burn it off, scrape the grates too. Not that big of a problem.

Mine does. Just get it to 600 or so and shut the lid for a while

Leave your vents open when not in use

Just happened to mine. I cleaned the grate real good. And brushed the mold as best I could.
I then got it up to like 500 for an hour maybe 1.5 hours and burned the rest off.

Like Babe said...leave vents open when not in use. I started doing that and never had mold issue again.

You don’t have to get that hot nor nearly that long to get that out of there.
I have one that is under a cover and one that is just under the eave of the house so it gets rained on. It molds up regularly.
I just build a fire and scrape the grates. Just heating up to 350 or so for 20 mins just like you would normally do is more than enough. It only takes 140 degrees to kill the mold, the rest is just getting rid of it, and you can just scrape the grates as per normal.

Happens to me all the time if I go awhile without grilling and I follow this method. Get it up over 600 and run it until the mold is gone. Do a quick scrub and let it go another 20-30 minutes before bringing down to whatever temp I'm looking for. It will get up to 800 easily at that point. So far I've never had any bad effects.
