They both looked like they hit low. Might still get blocked tv didn’t show very good angles

Mikelbr linked a SI article that analyzed these plays. It appears that FSU overloaded out left side with 6 on 4 and just found gaps. They said timing was decent and was not the problem.

I didn’t say they didn’t get in there. I’m saying the angle off his foot looked awfully low. I could be wrong

It was a little low which is something they can work on but the blocking is the bigger issue they have to fix

If you watch the replay, his foot hit the ground at least 1’ before the ball. The little black, rubber granules were flying up well before the ball. In golf terms, he hit it “fat”…

No we had a freshman on the left side that went the wrong way instead of blocking the inside man

He did it twice. Which means he either ignored coaching and made the repeated the same mistake in the biggest play of the game, or wasn't coached after making the mistake the first time. Due to the shittiness of Special Teams as a whole, I am guessing that it was lack of coaching/preparation.

Kelly said they switched out the guy who ducked up first blocked field goal. Blocks I believe came from different place on EXP

Think the 1st time it was Wire at tackle. 2nd was on Taylor on the wing.

Sort of. On the blocked FG, Taylor blocked the wrong guy on that play as well. The guy he should've been blocking was picked up by Cameron Wire and the guy Wire should've picked up blocked the kick. Whether that first block was his fault, Wire's fault, or poor coaching, it was an inexcusable coaching disaster that led to a variant of that same mistake happening twice in one game.

Wire and/or Taylor missed assignments on FG block

You are overloaded somewhere on kicks every time. You have 2 guys back, they don't have to put any back. Additionally, you can't wallop the long snapper so they tend not to put someone right over him. That's a 2.5 man overload somewhere every time with the offset of the LS.

The question is where do you overload. As the kicking team you want them to put it on the wings and outflank you because it takes longer to get to the launch point.

FSU saw us not blocking down and trying to block those flanks so they overloaded inside the edge, shortening their time to launch point.

Additionally, not blocking down made it easier (angles and such) to clear out a blocker for a trailer out of the overload to shoot the gap unimpeded. If you all bock down you can't do that clear out and impede that shooter enough.

You do not block hat-on-hat on kicks. Because of the number advantage you will lose somewhere everytime. You basically block zone, creating a traffic jam. The closer to the snapper you are, the more important that traffic jam. You do not have an assignment as a blocker other than getting in the way of the gap next to you. The size of that gap is determined by your LS and kicker and their operational time. The slower that time is, for whatever reason, the wider your gap to the inside to create more time on the flanks by increasing distance. It falls apart if you don't block that gap.

2 different guys at 2 different positions blocked out instead of sealing inside on the 2 blocked attempts.

I have never seen this happen twice in a game in my life, not even at the HS level.

Oh, so it's that easy....who knew?

frick that...many many many men spend their lives trying to diagram blocks.

It's simply an aspect of SEVERE undercoaching

When a lineman goes untouched to block a kick, it never has a chance to get up

The FG may have been a little low, but that kick is not blocked if the assignment isn't missed. On the XP they took it off his foot. A golf ball off a lob wedge would've been blocked.

And by the way, for all the things to bitch about last night, ESPN's dumb fricking ticker "blocking" the blocked kick is right up there.

Or could be on the kicker taking to much time to kick!! Just saying but we had a true freshman let a guy inside!

Poor blocking. No adjustments. Targeted the exact same spot. Poor coaching. We lose.
