Back 10 years ago and earlier there was good ducking hunting to be had west and SW of Houston. Is that still the case or has it gone to shite like everywhere else?

Anyone have a spot needing a gun?

I wonder how expensive that area has gotten and if it still holds birds.

I have a farm an hour from Houston if you want to hunt. Usually wood ducks. Kill big ducks if we have really prolonged cold weather

I appreciate that offer and may take you up on it.

I am curious if what's left of the rice fields west of the city still get birds. I am sure they get teal still like SWLA and no big ducks.

That's not too bad and to he honest I wouldn't expect much. Probably a decent to good teal season then mostly teal and a few big ducks on the fronts.

lots of teal, gadwall, widgeon, pintail, spoonies, scaup, etc.

Some redheads but those are more towards the coast - especially the lower coast. No Mallards to speak of.

Katy prairie as it once was is gone - need to go further around Eagle Lake, Garwood, etc.

There are still good properties in Katy/Brookshire. You have to get away from the I-10 corridor. I had several good hunts north of Brookshire last season on ducks and cranes.

I agree that the further west the better.

Thunderbird/Bucksnag/Garwood Hunting/Yardbird/Pintail/Pin Oak are your private clubs that will run you 5-10k per year. They will give you season long access to water and better chances at birds.

Most of the volume gigs west of town will take your money and promise you guaranteed water. By December your pond(s) will be mud holes. Do not join any group without solid references.
