Rian Johnson Is ‘Even More Proud’ of TLJ Five Years On

In a major new Empire interview, Rian Johnson looks back on The Last Jedi for its fifth anniversary, reflecting with a few years’ distance on his episode in the Skywalker Saga. “I’m even more proud of it five years on,” he says. “When I was up at bat, I really swung at the ball.” The film, he says, is not just a Star Wars movie – it’s a movie about Star Wars, and what it means to fans (himself included). “I think it’s impossible for any of us to approach Star Wars without thinking about it as a myth that we were raised with, and how that myth, that story, baked itself into us and affected us,” Johnson explains. “The ultimate intent was not to strip away – the intent was to get to the basic, fundamental power of myth. And ultimately I hope the film is an affirmation of the power of the myth of Star Wars in our lives.”
quote:
That extends to its controversial depiction of Luke Skywalker as a hermit who’s closed himself off from the Force, having sensed darkness in his nephew Ben Solo and accidentally pushed him further towards the Dark Side as Kylo Ren. But as much as Luke begins the film in a very different place than we left him at the end of the Original Trilogy, his arc over the course of The Last Jedi – ending in his death, and the birth of a new Skywalker legend – sees him become a galactic symbol of hope and rebellion once more. “The final images of the movie, to me, are not deconstructing the myth of Luke Skywalker, they’re building it, and they’re him embracing it,” the director explains. “They’re him absolutely defying the notion of, ‘Throw away the past,’ and embracing what actually matters about his myth and what’s going to inspire the next generation. So for me, the process of stripping away is always in the interest of getting to something essential that really matters.” Something essential, that really matters? He could be describing The Last Jedi itself.

Rian Johnson says he still wants to make his ‘STAR WARS’ trilogy & adds he often talks about the trilogy with Kathleen Kennedy.
“It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished.”

Glad I’m not as invested in this franchise.

Will the rings of power be your TLJ? I have never been more disappointed than the night I left the theater seeing TLJ. Still haven’t seen the rise of skywalker because of it

We’ve seen this story before, give it 15 years for this generation to grow up then you’ll start seeing memes and a fondness for the third trilogy and the overall take will shift to “ya know what, that wasn’t bad” that turns into “actually that WAS good”
Disney knows the big picture. Wait until those nostalgia seeds blossom

Let the downvotes rain down, but TLJ isn't near as bad as people pretend it is.
I get why people were mad at it for the most part, but after rewatching it a while back...outside of a few gripes it's not overly bad IMO. It's well-made at least, and some parts of it are good. While it is ultimately a fairly useless movie, it doesn't "ruin" things for me like people claim it does for them (like Luke, for example).
That being said, Disney fricked up majorly by not letting JJ Abrams just direct all three movies.

I still question whether Rian or Kennedy was more at fault for the abortion of TLJ

There is an old video of him saying that he wants to make movies that half the audience hates and half loves.
Makes me hate him even more

I agree with a lot of that. I think RJ would be fine making an original SW movie. It's just scenes like Luke throwing the lightsaber, and Leia Poppins that were so cringe for me.

It’s pretty terrible
The Force Awakens was a solid movie

It was a good, soft reboot that felt like SW again and a homage to the original. At the end there were plenty of directions they could have taken it. The characters were interesting.
Unfortunately, a lot of people will downvote this because TLJ makes TFA look worse in retrospect.
Before TLJ came out, I had seen TFA 3 times in the theater with different folks. It was just fun. Now, I don't really look forward to anything SW related anymore.

More so. Because RoP isn’t remotely Tolkien. It’s a true looting of the man’s legacy.
George Lucas willingly sold his work. Of course he was lied to , assuming he’d be allowed some input, then Kathleen Kennedy just stabbed him in the back
