NBA Finals are usually being held. David Robinson won his last title/retired on a Father's Day, actually.

I get that, but I get the reaction of people who've turned it off too. Everybody has a different threshold for when somebody's activism outweighs their entertainment value. I've never really watched the NBA or the NFL so I've never cared about their virtue signaling.

I watch actors all the time who probably have views that are the polar opposite of mine. I don't know their views and I don't care. When they make their entire identity politically adversarial they're not that entertaining to me any longer and I watch something else.

I hear ya. Honestly, I just assume most in entertainment/sports are leftists unless they say otherwise. And even then, I just don't really care. Sports is just my favorite way to connect with people and entertain myself--probably not gonna change at this point.

Will there be free admission, free food, and drop boxes available, along with someone from a non-profit available to help people fill out their ballots?

"I'll probably have a game on, but I'm not going out of my way to watch anything. I never go to ESPN's site to read anything. I've stopped listening to all sports talk radio. In short, I just have lost interest."

I have done something similar, most of it unconsciously at first but I have noticed. I focus on the part I love and have always loved the most: the games themselves. I used to watch SportsCenter religiously and follow the "outside the lines" sports news but have largely quit that altogether. I am sure the (one-sided) politicization is a big reason why. But I still love the games themselves.

What I said was:

quote:

If you agree with their actions then it makes all the sense in the world for you to continue to fund them. If you don't and you still do, you're a fricking idiot or too weak to act on your own convictions.

For all I know you fall into the first category, in which case I just said it makes totals sense. I don't agree, but more power to you and I'd hope you and they have a great time together. If you fall in the second, I said what I said.

And there's never been anything I've ever said on a message board that I would not say to someone's face, which is one of the reasons I never go full overboard. If I knew you in person and we were having this discussion and I heard you say you were against all of the nonsense athletes and sports leagues were doing but were still buying tickets, going to games, watching on TV, etc. I'd happily tell you that you were being a fricking idiot and you did not have the courage of your convictions.

That said, I was speaking generally here and not directly to you...though given you got upset I take it you DO disagree with them but feel that you are "above" letting it distract you from being entertained by them so you continue to fund them?

Pretty close to where I am, actually. I've always been a fan mostly of the actual game (hence why even fantasy sports was a dud with me--I just don't care enough outside of rooting for my own teams, usually). I mainly follow media that's just focused on my team, and leave the trappings/additional punditry and narratives to others. Partly because I really don't like to be preached at (whether I agree with the politics being preached or not), but also probably a natural evolution of my own maturity/time constraints. My living room TV has to compete with Nick Jr. and Disney+ shows, now, so it's probably gonna be on those instead of SportsCenter. I'm ok with that as long as I get to watch my Spurs and Aggies when they're actually playing the games.

And this is yet another reason why my interest in sports television has diminished about 75 percent…

This is such a lazy take, honestly. People work hard for the ability to spend their entertainment time/dollar how they deem fit. I can hold the opinion that Gregg Popovich has batshit insane politics, yet also be of the mind that he's the greatest basketball coach of all time. As a longtime hoops/Spurs fan, I don't see how it's lacking courage of convictions to choose to entertain myself how I see fit. Especially when I assume the vast majority of the sports/entertainment establishment is going to be left of center, anyways. I just refuse to allow their antics to dictate my enjoyment.

And, just for the record (given the tenor of responses itt), I'm not upset or mad or anything. This is all academic for me at this point. People just need to do what makes them happy RE: entertainment. Life is short.

I don't believe I was upset then or now. I was amused by your bluster, but regardless ...

"I take it you DO disagree with them but feel that you are "above" letting it distract you from being entertained by them so you continue to fund them?"

As someone who is right of center politically, I disagree more often than not with most athletes and almost all actors and entertainers (at least to my knowledge). If I enjoy their work, I watch and enjoy, and have little to no problem compartmentalizing. I also have friends I disagree with politically.

Good to see you too. Need more REAL Aggies like you, Wolf, and EKG. Was something in the water when Hank was enrolled?

No doubt this happened with me, as well, but even as the kids aged, I never went back.

Do we hafta discuss HankyPanky? Cuz I got nothing lol but I think he likes the role of board contrarian/provocateur. NTTAWWT. This place CAN be a bit of an echo chamber sometimes.

It's not lazy, it's proactive. Take entertainment like movies or TV. for decades I took that viewpoint and never allowed what I thought were my politics to prevent me from watching a movie or TV show that happened to have an actor that espoused views opposite to my own. I shrugged it off and decided it didn't matter enough to change my behavior because I wanted to be entertained.

But this was when it was a fairly rare occurrence. Now, not only do they all have to toe the same line but they all are essentially mandated by the mob to be vocal about every topic. So instead of overlooking one loud obnoxious actor, I'm asked to ignore an entire cast, plus the director, plus the producers, and the entire movie studio. And if I dare talk back, I'm told by the very same people that can't shut up about THEIR politics that I'm the problem for bringing MY politics to the table. Nah...frick all that.

Well yeah, I agree. I realized that if I continued to fund these people I'd be miserable. More specifically, I felt like a punk being taken advantage of and being laughed at for continuing to fund people that openly told me they hate me. So I walked away. Took a minute to not really feel like I was missing anything, but now it's great. I'm happier, I waste less time as a spectator watching other people enjoy themselves, and I feel good about where my money goes. I tend to get talkative about this topic because too often guys here act like they CAN'T walk away because it's too much a part of their lives...but as I a guy that lived it for a long time, I want to let them know they can, if they want. Just takes the desire to do it. After all, we're talking about wants, and not needs here.

hope they set up ballot drop boxes at each door. that'll be awesome. i mean, hell, where else will you be able to drop off 50 ballots AND see people play ball who hate the very country they live in.
